Outcome....

I had a TRHR 12 months ago and on the whole have recovered extremely well - able to walk up to 10 miles after 4 months, now doing 3-4 miles every couple of days on average, plus lots of camping in the summer and driving around the country visiting mates.  I'm 63 and not overweight.  The problem is that my hip still hurts - not a huge amount and not all the time, but enough for me to take paracetemol and/or ibuprofen  probably once a week or so.  My GP says that surgery is never a 100%, and if I've got the pain down from a pre-op of 7-8 to a post-op of 1-2 then that's as much as I can expect.  Is this correct?  I've had bunions on both feet done in the past and have no pain or discomfort whatever now.  If the arthritis has been removed - what's hurting??  Anyone any ideas/comments.....?  Thanks.

Wow maggyh, Respect!

I am impressed with your walking up to 10 miles. Well I am 5 months post op but aged 68 so the best I have managed is 2 miles. I still take the odd pain killer when I am aching after over-doing things.

The pain is muscles which are weak after being cut. I reckon the body does a wonderful job repairing the damage of the surgeon's knife but it all takes time.

Hi, I am 8 months and am fit not over weight and I go out with my old dog but I get very achy in the hip replacement area,. Was signed off surgeon very please after 8 weeks so am thinking about going to GP as take painkillers everyday. Would have thought pain free by know?

Not sure why.

Yes agree with Shirley. I'm 68 & 4 months+ down the line and get pain north east &West of the incision As well as 2/3 down my thigh. Been told it's the muscles not strong enough but also could be a tear. Been given some different exercises which hopefully will improve matters for me.

Same here I am 69 have replied to maggie. Rather fed up

What type surgery? Anterior? Posterior? Majes a huge difference.

I have inner soreness a bruised feeling and ocassional aches/pains i take motrin or tramadol. I have the pain in the left side of thigh and incision area, also the left hip around the back. Not the same pain as before the THR but new aches/pains, and I'm almost 10 months.

Hi Maggy!

I'm 11 months out and still have some dull pain here and there but not enough to take any medication. I stil take steps one at a time and still have a slight limp.

All in all, I'm pleased with my surgery. No OA pain and that's enough for me

Aha, so I was not imagening it  ...

I am 11 months post-op from 1st THr and 5 months from 2nd THR and I sometimes wonder why I still feel "pain" - Not the OA pain, but as said, other kinds of pain, soreness, stiffness and feeling bruised - even the "tight-it-almost-hurts" pain in groins -

Somehow I thought I would be further along and pain free -

But then, when I think back to where I was one year ago, and in between the 2 surgeries, good Lord, what a difference -

Good job Maggy and so impressed with the 10 miles walk -

Big warm hug

all is well, darling

Wow indeed Maggy - good job -

So these odd pains will last then, I was beginning to think it was just for my recovery, perhaps it's for life now.  Oh well, it's far better than the OA pain I had before the operation.

At 6 weeks, I can cope with 3.5 miles, so that seems pretty good, even if I am exhausted at the end.  I never used to be, not even after the initial hip surgery, only after this blooming revision.

I guess I was starting from abetter place last time, this time I was starting from a hip operation that I had only half-recovered from.

Thanks for all these comments, m'dears, it looks like there's a whole load of us still in pain/discomfort which is both comforting and a tad depressing.  Btw, not sure of the difference between "posterior" and "anterior" incisions - can you clarify?  Seems to me the aching may be "just" the result of scar tissue and the general damage done by any pretty significant surgery.  Knowing I'm not the only one does make a big difference, though, and makes it so much easier to accept.  Plus, all I have to do is think about the state I'd be in if I'd been born just a few decades earlier, when this miraculous surgery wasn't possible......

Discomfort is a better word....I had anterior, 3" scar on front of left thigh going down, right where your hand would lie in pants pocket....

Hi Maggy,

I am 5 months post 2nd hip op. We have to remember

that the osteo arthritic hip has been replaced which takes

away that pain. However we probably have it in other bones

around the area.. When it is cold you can ache from them.

That is what I am given to understand.

My husband is about to have a reverse shoulder replacement,

not as common as hips, but also osteo arthritis, bone on bone.
