Hi,

Sorry to hear you are feeling this way.

If you do not want your thyroid to become worse you must take the tablets, it will get worse if you do not take them. Ask you doctor what is causing you to be Hyper. Tell him that you do not like taking the pills and see waht he says. Do not rush into surgery without doing any research on the subject. Removal of the Thyroid is permanent. Have you been referred to the hospital to see a specialist/Endo?

Do talk to your GP - he/she may have alternative answers.

Hi Stacey, please go see your GP to discuss your meds! Perhaps you were given the 5 mg tablets, but there are 20 mg tablets available as well so you won't need to take so many.

Surgery is a radical solution, but afterwards you'll probably need to take tablets for being underactive. Radioactive iodine usually has same effect. But the thyroxine tablets are very small.....

Hi Stacey!

Please go to see your doctor. Don't be afraid to tell your dr you have lowered the dose yourself. It is best to be open with your doctor and they will be able to help you more.

I don't have a thyroid gland as I had it removed 11 years ago due to cancer. It is much better to keep your thyroid and get the right amount of thyroxine to regulate it. Surgery isn't the only answer. It is a lot harder when you have no thyroid and more problems.

I take 150mg a day of thyroxine and have just had a blood test for Tsh and T4. My tsh level shows that it is overactive. I do itch a lot and feel really tired. Also feel shaky and panicky at times. I am waiting to hear from consultant what I need to do about my meds. i have to have a higher dose of thyroxine to sop any cancer cells coming back. So might have to stay on 10mg and be overactive as no other choice.

I find the best time to take your thyroxine is first thing in the morning on getting up. That way you won't forget it. Unless your doctor has told you to take it at a certain time. It is best on an empty stomach as it gets into the system quicker. You should avoid taking calcium or iron tablets at the same time as they will reduce the thyroxine working as well.

I feel sure if you give it a chance you will start to feel better. You need to give it at least 4 to 6 weeks to notice any real difference and for your body to get use to the thyroxine.

Good luck and if you want to chat anymore just come back on this site.
