Overactive thyroid?

I have been feeling ill for over a year now, I am constantly exhausted and have had several blood tests done to investigate.  I was refered to General medicine at the hospital where I had further blood tests taken and they have come back with raised thyroid antibodies.  I have been to my doctor today and have been told that they would not give any treatment as my tsh levels were normal, despite the fact that all my symptoms relate to an overactive thyroid?  my TSH levels from a previous test were 4.1 and my test in September was 4.9 - I am so frustrated after going back and forward with the same symptoms for over a year and now having a possible diagnosis which they wont treat, what can I do?

Georgia, you may have Hashimoto's disease.  You can either be hyperactive or hypoactive with Hashimoto's or vary between the two extremes.  There is a lady who posted on this Board who has Hashimoto's disease and she successfully treated it with a supplement called L-carnitine.  Carnitine is an amino acid normally found in your muscles but it gets depleted from the muscles of people with hyperthyroidism through urination and needs to be replaced.  I will send you her story through a private email.

thanks Linda that would be great, any help or advice is welcome as I feel I am banging my head against a wall at the moment.  I was even diagnosed with agitated depression as a result of my sleeplessness/restlessness/Tiredness but hyperthyroidism makes much more sense.  Today the doctor took tests for my pituitary functon as embarassingly I am also leaking breast milk and suffering from ocipital migraines which started about a month ago (despite my youngest being 10, I asked the doctor about this around 4 years ago and was told it was normal!)  I am tired of being tired and feeling like a hypochondriac :-(

I had a high Prolactin level (this is a hormone for breast milk) even though I never was pregnant or had children.  I was leaking milk from my breasts.  I would have that level checked as well.  You may have a pituitary adenoma (a cyst on your pituitary gland) but when we have anything that is off hormonally, it affects so many other hormones.  Insist on the doc checking you out for this.
