Overdone it!

Hi all, hope you are all well. Since Sunday when I walked my first mile, I decided I would make this a daily occurrence. So far so good but today I got a bit ahead of myself - i ironed for an hour this morning, took my dog out twice this afternoon (just up & down the road), did a bit of light gardening, made tea & stood talking to our builders for an hour & then did the mile with my dog! Got home, cooked dinner, washed up & now sitting down with a bag of frozen peas! I'm not in pain, just ache a bit but I've got Physio in the morning & I think she'll put me through my paces! Hubby is now back at work otherwise he wouldn't have allowed me to do all this!

Wow, that is loads!

Hope your Phisio doesn't work you too hard after all that!

I'm not getting any Phisio? It has all just been left to me?!

Well done

Wow !  Remind me how many weeks post op you are . I thought you were about the same as me.  I'll be 5 weeks on Saturday.  Nowhere near as fit as you.  I can walk about indoors with no crutches but need just the one when I'm out and about.  Doing a fair bit of walking though.  Seeing my consultant tomorrow for a check up.  Well done to you though.

Such a lesson in your post, Fern.  I think you're just a week+ ahead of me (LTHR June 17), and I haven't done as much as you but yesterday I did more than usual.  30 minutes (10x3) walking up and down my hallway, two visitors, and then just lots of the normal puttering around to fix my meals, tidy house, etc.  By 6pm, I was just exhausted!  Went to bed.  Didn't fall asleep but definitely just stayed in bed reading, watching tv, dozing.  I feel better today but was a little bit worried.

I think we (me) start feeling better and then start wanting to do more than we should.

Tomorrow I see my surgeon and get my staples out.  Friday is my first Physio.  Will be nice to have those behind me.

And I can tell now that the 'Rush' of the surgery, my sister visiting, lots of friends dropping by....is now all starting to Peter out....leaving me wanting to get on with my life but still really stuck with all this recuperating.  I'm getting impatient!

Have to remember slow and steady..........

Hope you're feeling better and let us know how Physio goes tomorrow.

I firstly well done you for doing all that you should be very proud, apprently My physio told me everyone has a day where the energy flows, you feel fabulous and can take on the world, it's a turning point apparently, so well done, it's all up and good from now on.

Hi Nicola, I had one session last week back at the hospital & now I'm going back to see a private one that I'm paying for myself. I saw her after a knee op a couple of years ago & she was invaluable. She was also the first "professional" that had an inkling that my pain was all related to my hip! She made me promise that if I ever had a THR I would go back to see her!

Hi Jennifer, 4 weeks today! In fact this time 4 weeks ago I was probably trying to do my first wee on a bedpan! I am still resting & taking naps if I need them but today I've probably done too much. I was told by my Physio last week to ditch the crutches & use my trekking poles, they are fantastic & help you to get your walking gait back. I found with my crutches I was leaning too heavily & using my arms too much x

I'm 3 weeks behind you, I think I may order trekking poles for when I start walking. I'm following you ❤️

Ah ok!! When I left hospital I was given a booklet with a few exercises in it and that's it. I feel like I've been chucked out of hospital and no idea what i should and should not be doing. I also don't go back to the hospital for another 3 weeks (8 weeks after surgery). I called the helpline number I was given and the nurse told me I should only be walking twice a day which I do not think is enough as I'm able to do lots more with no pain so don't see why you shouldn't. Also have heard about going in the pool to do exercises helps but she told me no. Have you heard anything about this?

I think you're right Leslie, I have the patience of a saint with other people & I did a lot of dog training which also requires patience & calmness but when it comes down to myself, aaaaarrrrrrrrggghhhh, I just want to scream & get on with it! I forgot I also had 2 work colleagues visit at lunchtime & one of them brought me a couple of jigsaws which I absolute love (so therapeutic). The only problem I have is my jigsaw board needs to go on my dining table as my other chairs are still too low at the moment. My dining table is still full of lovely flowers so I'm waiting for them to die off before I can attempt a jigsaw! I'm getting bored now as well (worse since hubby went back to work). I've got loads of things to do but I just can't be bothered! Good luck tomorrow with your staples, I had mine out 2 weeks ago & I hardly felt a thing (I think there was 28 in total) x

I have some trekking poles.  I will try them.  Take it easy tomorrow though.  Don't over do it.

I go to go to the pool 3 times a week. I have a float  around my waist and do a walking action up and down the pool. It's wonderful.  Go for it.

Hi,I had my right hip replacement last march2016) To be honest it's been a long haul.I am my Hubby's carer.I had little help to get back on my feet.Even now I am not brilliant as I need the other hip sorting,& my two knees.! But I will delay as I am scared and my muscle s are so tense all the time.I was told it can take up to a good year to get back to normal after a hip op.My Hubby is also Disabled with OA of spine, hips & knees.Hes severely sighted & deaf.I was in for 4 days with my op.And I never had hydrotherapy till I had clips taken out !!I had Session s of hydrotherapy which I liked.regards Amanda h

My surgeon told me to walk, little & often, it's the best exercise. If you go in the pool I suggest you do what Jennifer suggested, just remember, no breast stroke x

My surgeon also said to keep getting up every hour especially for the first 2 weeks, it helps to prevent stiffness x

Catch me up then! They really are great. Not sure where you are but I got mine from Costco £15ish x

Thanks Sue x

i think. Get those staples out and you will feel better. Give it a couple of days though because I felt a bit nauseous after having my dressing removed. Just because the reality of the wound is sobering!

then think how far you have come and start to enjoy your new hip.  You are such a positive person.

The worst is behind you. Onwards and upwards!

Slow and steady. I have actually been a lot slower than I think I could have. But then someone I know. Age 50. Her uncemented joint loosened, because she did too much I think. So long term I think we will get the same result if we go slow or fast. But fast is more likely to harm us?

sorry rambling I think!

Kris. X

Hi Amanda, it sounds like you've had a really tough time & caring for your husband as well. My only advice would be not to put off your other ops. I delayed my THR for nearly 2 years & it was the worst decision ever. Big hugs x

Thanks Jennifer. How many weeks after your op did you start doing this? I had both hips replaced 5 weeks ago and I'm keen to start this asap. Yes I will remember no breast stroke, thanks!
