Hi everyone, I am 59 and two weeks posterier repair, all the usual problems like every one else, but i have been told from a nurse at the hospital from end of week two,to use ovestine cream and that due to atrophy I won't heal with out it as been post menopausal for many many years due to a hysterectomy at 39 and unable to use h.r.t. I rang the hospital today to find out how often and was told everyday for 3 weeks and then stop but in the hospital I was told I would need another prescription from doctors when it ran out. does anyone have experience of this cream post op to help healing? many thanks Chris
Hello Chris. Ovestin is estriol which you probably know and you will also know that as we get older and menopausal the vaginal wall gets thinner and the hormone helps to build up the wall and will protect the repair. I had to use pessaries prior to my repair and still do occasionally although I am also taking HRT. I have never heard of a repair not healing because of the atrophy however. Ovestin is HRT so as you couldn't take it before is this going to be ok for you?
Hi Matron, I have no idea, many years ago tried taking pills then patches and I got really bad leg cramps so discontinued.It was when I was leaving the hospital and was fed up of waiting for the prescription and said hubby would pick it up the next day the nurse said you will not heal with it, even though I didn't need it straight away, but it was bedlam on the hospital ward, different people telling you different things.
that should say you will nit heal with out it, she was very stroppy with me,
You've been given conflicting information so I would see your GP when you need a repeat prescription because if you are going to need it for any length of time it will be him prescribing it.
She had no right being stroppy with you. Not very caring!

Hello Chris - I was prescribed Ovestin prior to surgery as the consultant said I had vaginal atrophy which contributed to the cause of the prolapse and strengthening the area was useful pre surgery. I started taking again about 3 weeks post surgery. I'm sure you will heal without it but I think it helps with healing. I think it has less side effects than HRT tablets so you may be able to use it, though obviously your GP can advise or you could maybe call the consultant's secretary or the ward for advice. I find it helps with the lingering post surgery incontinence.
I agree with the incontinence, it really does help. I took mine for about 4 months post surgery but I think my vaginal wall was unusually thin.
Hi thanks for the reply Moira, very helpful.I think it would have been better before surgery as well but the mess with my hospital is unbvelievable, I waited 18 months from gp refereral to get it done, it is the second time now, first time was 15 years ago and she said there is nothing left to work with so I am going to be really good this time.
I wonder if that's why the nurse thought you would benefit from using Ovestin because you've previously had a prolapse repair. I'm still not convinced it will help healing but it could help the vaginal wall protect the repair. It may be worth asking your consultant when you have a post op check if he thought vaginal atrophy could have contributed to you needing another repair. Just a thought.

Also she did say the vaginal wall had collapsed and so she has done everything as tight as she can.
Sounds like she's done a good job and tightening everything will make things better.
Hi. I am 55 and day 12 after a posterior repair for a prolapse, first few days passing stools were awful, not constipated but the process of passing stools nearly made me faint. I was given suppositories from GP for a few days which really helped, question is I still pass red blood when passing stops, much more comfortable and no longer using anti inflamatories or pain killers. Is this ok or should I have it checked, worried I may have popped a stitch.
Hi Cathy, think maybe you should maybe get it checked out, I have been very lucky this time no constipation but i am taking laxido powder every other day and I eat a lot of fruit and salad. I haven't had any blood at all since day 5, only pink discharge but very slight and not very often. Matron may be of more help. Good luck and are you getting enough rest?

Hello cathy I've just read your post. Having a small amount of bleeding from the rectum after a bowel movement is normal and unless you bleed excessively then don't worry because it will settle. It's often difficult to avoid a stitch being caught due to it's position and there's often some irritation inside the rectum often caused by a constipated stool. You do need to rest though and if possible take stool softeners to keep the stools soft.
Thank you. Stools are soft(porridge!) no where near as much pain now when passing but I'm sure the blood is from vagina, no bleeding after passing stool just in toilet bowl. Very red. Clean pad on after with no blood just coloured distcharge
