4.5 weeks in and my knee is weak and painfull on operated side!!! Hip is great but I can hardly stand goin to bed for rest of week! Would not mind if I could say I'd done something to cause it, must just be from operation.
Hi Jason, I am about 5 weeks post op, my whole op leg is significantly swollen and the knee was pretty bad and sore too but has gone down a little, I read that it will eventually all get better
Im 4 weeks post, and my knee and thigh muscles are painfull at times, my knee is aching and keeps me from sleeping sometimes too. it comes and goes not doing anything to upset it. go figure?
My knee hurt before surgery and I thought after my THR it would be better, since my doc said the knee pain was caused by my bad hip. In your case apparently there was no knee pain until after your THR. Maybe your knee pain now is due to your hip's post op pain being referred to your knee? I'm nine weeks post THR now and I still have knee pain with no idea whether it will go away as my hip heals or not.
I guess it is a waiting game to see if your knee will settle ; I hope for you that a healed hip will equal a pain free knee. Best of luck,
Hi, at four week post TLHR the swelling in my thigh, knee and calf reduced very rapidly with now justslight swelling in ankle. I thought it never go down but has. At moment the very top of thigh and wound area tight so causing a limp but with more exercise, longer walks and a beer or two bit by bit improve more. Hopfully this will happen to you and also no knee pain. Keep the faith, don't push too hard and works out well soon fr you.
Thank you all for replies, Don't. Usually like to moan , but as you All know, these are trying times. My leg was swollen for first week then was fine, bit of muscle ache now and again, controlled by paracetamol and ibuprofen. They aren't touching my knee tho . Which was fine up to the other day. Could be ligament s etc finding new shape now hip is realigned,, did spend years walking with limp and left foot pointing outwards. I guess the timing of some of these posts tells its own tale . Now where did I stash those leftover morphine tablets? Cheers all again, best wishes to all.
Hi
i get what I call my restless knee at night when I go to bed to rest (and lie awake all night). It won't go away. Then on walking it will sometimes just give way. I thought it may be something to do with all the chopping of tendons etc during the op .
Hi Jason, I had my right hip replaced in October 14 and have found the thight from the knee to the hip was very painful and was still walking with one crutch if any distance had to be walked but when I went for my final visit to the surgeon he said unfortunately me knee was the problem and has booked me in for a knee replacement in July!! Hope this isn't what your problem is.
good luck Valerie
Omg, they can have the whole darn leg off if that the case, least I'd get a blue badge! Seriously, sorry you've got to go through that, touch wood my knee seems to have settled down now. Just gets frustrating, I need to get back to work, like now, but can't even drive to get there. I am already thinking of planning for my revision which will probably be before I retire, so I need to start saving now.
Good luck all. Jay
Hi Jason, I am 73 years old, but as I work part time for my son I went back to work after 3 weeks, he picked me up so I didn't have to drive and I just work on the computer and do a bit of packing. Just make sure you do the exercises as they really help.
best wishes Valerie
Hi Jason I had my op 9th Sept last year when I woke up the first thing I said was my knee hurts on operated leg ,was told it can happen and will settle down. At about 5 weeks the knee pain got worst lots of swelling was told again it should settle down. Did all my exercises as best I could NHS physio didn't offer any solution. . In January couldn't bend knee at all I was back at work getting and out of car , stairs a nightmare pain pain !!!! Physio for my hip said oh dear but your hip is fine so we'll sign you off and probably see you back here with knee !!! I went to pilates with a private physio that didn't help because could only do half the session couldn't get on the floor without a big drama , embarrassing !!! To say I was depressed is an understatement . My Gp sent me for knee X-Ray showed small amount of OA but not enough to cause such pain I felt like a fake. Then in February they thought I might have torn a liagment so had MRI which showed nothing wrong. Now I am told the whole problem is my thigh muscle was not strong enough so when I started to walk again , my kneecap was grinding causing pain and swelling. So the moral to this story is get yourself a very good physio, I just wasn't given the right exercises , at one point I was told not to do certain exercises if it was irritating my knee , this I think was the worst advice ever. I should of been given more not less to really build up my thigh. I waited years before I had this op so maybe the muscle had wasted almost to nothing . Sorry if my story is a bit long winded but you never know some of it might help you. I still can't bend completely but going to another physio who said we will get there but it will be a slow process, was able step up a small stair this week so I'm going in the right direction .best wishes
Hi Jason,
After walking for so long in a particular way designed by your body to protect your damaged hip and to avoid pain, you will now be walking in a completely different way so you will be using muscles that you potentially haven't used for a long time.
its the same with me, I had back surgery before this and walked with a stoop and now I've had my hip done I should be able to stand up straight fir the first time in years. Easier said than done though as my muscles have shortened in places and are fighting me when I stand up straight. I just know it's something I have to work on and try to concentrate in my posture when I walk.
Hopefully this will be a similar cause for you and it's just time that will put this right.

Thank you all for replies, im 46 so prob got 30 years to go before i retire. No OA been found in me yet, my hip was due to FAI. Im fairly sure the pain is from ligaments as linda says. My job is in building prototype cars, often lifting large blocks of modelling board , and even hammer form material at 15 stones a board. So i need to get back to good strength having done all that moaning I can feel leg and knee getting stronger day by day, tho thigh muscle on roght still obviously more defined than on operated left leg. Got gym monday so see what physios there think .
good recovery all . jay
