Hi. I had my right hip replaced for the 2nd time in 13 months, almost 4 months ago. It was done again as I had a large leg discrepancy that couldn’t be fixed with heel raisers.
consequently I’ve had continuous backache both before and after this last surgery. I know it takes time to heal but I’m now slightly worried that there is a point on my back, above the hip, that hurts if I touch it. It is also now beginning to hurt more when walking. I’m becoming frustrated and a bit depressed as I really thought I’d be almost back to normal by now. My husband is also having to curtail plans as I simply can’t walk too far without pain.
any suggestions would be very welcome. I’m away from home for a month swimming, walking and generally trying to improve. I’m otherwise a healthy but overweight 72 year old - trying to lose the weight that’s gone on since the first surgery!
Thanks for any suggestions
I can relate to the weight gain, spending most of July in hospital on my back hasn't helped at all!
Pain in your back above the hip - could it be because you are now walking straight, which is something you haven't been able to do. Muscles realigning and getting used to their neighbouring muscles realigning too?
If it's red and/or swollen I'd get a doctor to have a look just in case of infection as we're more susceptible after a THR.
Hope you get to the cause soon, and back on the road to recovery.
Graham
Thanks Graham. Hope you’re well on your way to recovery too. You’ve had a hell of a year and I’m amazed by your strength. There’s nothing to see on my back so you’re probably right. I know the muscles need to realign after a year of walking on a slope - but didn’t really expect the pain now. Fingers crossed it sorts itself out. Good luck with your progress too. Sue
Pippy, the best exercise for back strenghtening is pilates. In most towns and cities there are classes at the local leisure centres.
Sue,
Thanks - as you know, I'm a 'glass half full' kind of person.
Jen is very right, Pilates is reportedly extremely good for core strengthening, you could do a lot worse than giving that a go for a few lessons. Other than that, I have found 'hands on' sports physiotherapy extremely good for various aches too.
Ive found doing the physio excercises in the small pool really helpful I put a stone on in weight Pre op because I couldn’t walk anywhere. So try to swim a bit more it will take the pressure off your back. X
