Im 11 weeks post thr when i was sleeping on my back i had no pain at night but now on my side im waking with pain is it udual to still have this pain. Im also still limping quite a bit and pain in my buum which i think is prob the gluteus muscle i hsve been back at work as a hairdresser for four weeks .
Are you still taking pain relief? My surgeon said i could sleep on my side again at six weeks but at eight weeks i find it to painful to roll onto my side still. I still find my leg is a bit of a dead weight at times and although i found the exercises good in the first six weeks i got a bit over confident and think i did too much walking as i have set myself back now. it's very frustrating as i would love to be able to go back to work.
Sorry to hear you're in pain. I am now 12 weeks post-op and I find it loads easier to sleeep on (either) side than on my back but still do have pain sometimes if I turn over in the night. If I sit down for a bit and then get up, it still gets stiff and then I limp for a bit till it all gets going again. It sounds as if this is all quite normal and most people seem to be saying on the forum we all recover at different rates and just have to be patient...(not my strong suit). I'm amazed that you could go back to work 4 weeks ago, my sister is a hairdresser and so I know it's a physically demanding job and there's no way I could have done it 4 weeks ago. And now even though I am taking things as easy as I can, I still get really really tired and need to sleep more than ever before in my life. Again everyone seems to be saying this is normal after surgery and it's our body's way of recovering... Wonder whether you could try to reduce your hours for a bit to see if it ls just because you are doing too much?Pain relief? I still sometimes take paracetemol as a precaution, particularly if I know I have a lot to do//have to walk a long way. Also are you still doing your physio? I think it's good to do as much exercise as you can as I've found it strengthens muscles that you don't use when just doing normal stuff. I'm going to the gym now and am amazed how stiff and weak my other muscles and joints have become just because I haven't been using them as much as before the op - eg even lifting a small wieght above my head is hard now when before I could do it easily. The gym people seem to be saying it's really important to strenthen your core agan...Don;t know if this is helpful as everyone is different and it all depends on your age aswell I think ( I am 65). But maybe you could talk to your GP about whether you shoudln't try to cut down work if possible. Good luck..
Thx alot for your replies. I get a bit paranoid about things being ok.I think i need to concentrate on doing more excersises to build up the muscles but get a bit lazy when i get in from work. But being self employed needs must. I still take pain killers at night and sometimes during the day when my leg gets stiff.Like you i seem to get really tired still I think its cos everthing takes a bit more effort.Going to see the consultant Wednesday with a list of questions and hopefully be able to get in the bath (cant wait)
Oh yes, the bath!! I just had my first one this week and it was bliss. Please don't say you're lazy when you get in from work, your're just tired out - be nice to yourself!! Wonder whether you could go to a nice warm hydrpool/hot-tub/jacuzzi to do some gentle core exercise as a treat for yourself? I'm really glad you're seeing the consultant on Wednesday and they should be able to say whether everything is OK ..
That sounds like a good idea.maybe go down to the local pool its just a pain getting dressed after ill have to go in my flip flops lol
I felt very frustrated at 11 weeks thought I should have been further on than I was, I'm 16 weeks post op now and feeling almost normal. Went shopping to MIlton KEynes yesterday then went out for a meal and then walked home amazing , I've not been that active all in one day for years. I now look back to when I was 12 post op and realise how unrealistic my expectations were. I've done and will keep doing my exercises and now hopefully it is starting to pay off, I do think you should work less hours for a while though , hairdressing is a lot of standing and I wouldn't want to do it now let alone at 11 weeks. Give your time to heal
The world goes on and people have to work and it isn't easy but it doesn't matter what your age is this operation is huge! I was thinking about how much my body has to do to recover from it and how many calories and what types of food groups to repair the damage done to my body. For a start I know I have lost weight which tells me at the onset of my recovery I was not eating sufficient food and then there is the sheer amount of physio which also takes its toll so no wonder we are all tired doesn't matter who we are. I think we should be kind to ourselves, rest when needed even if it's only 30 mins or a power nap, eat a good diet and enogh food groups to repair bone and tissue and nerves but take pain meds when necessary and still try and do some exercise which is not just walking. The core exercises are good to do at any age even if only a few and you can build up as you feel up to them. I'm 67 and lie on the bed and bring knees up to chest and pull stomach in and lift and lower each keg without either touching the bed. Butt raises off the bed too help. It doesn't have to be floor work and sit ups. I also think we should be kind to ourselves at any stage of this recovery. It's been hard on our bodies.
Gillian,
I am about 13 wks post THR and no loner have pain while sleeping. I do however still sleep with a pillow between my legs sometimes while laying on my side. It takes a while for those muscles to stretch and settle down but what really helped me is while doing my exercises laying on the bed. I will roll over on my side and lift my op leg up several times (abductors) because my inner thigh mucsle was so weak. This has really helped me. I never over did it with the exercising, maybe 15 min twice a day and that was plenty, and it still brings relief when I'm having a bad day. It sounds like you might be over doing it with the job a little bit.
Carol,
I don't know what kind of surgery you had, anterior, postier etc. but it sounds like you're doing great. What concerns me is that my doctor told me the only way to pop my hip out (dislocate) it would be to pull my leg up to my chest. Please be careful doing this. I use my core always when lifting my legs and even do modified pushups for my upper body and core. It feels great to be in shape. Please just be carefull.
Hi from across the ocean, wow I couldn't have gone back to work that soon. Do you thing your doing too much too soon.hope you will continue to get better.
You need to get some deep physical therapy from physio. Your muscles are probably in knots and spasming. Only deep massage will releive this. Unfrtunately NHS physio treatment is not hands on - at least in my region- so youwill probably have to pay for it... You need to keep muscle supple, exercises very important to stretch it. Also gentle massage round scar area will stop formation of deep scar tissue. Bio oil and also lavender oil are excellent (for latter M&S Floral range Lavendar Body cream is good and cheap!)
That does not sound good Unfortunately, I had the exact same symtoms and I still have them, 15 month after THP.
Do know the brand of hip you used?
Interesting about losing wieght. So have I, and I now, 3 months on, look much worse than I did in the couple of weeks immediately after the op. O am trying to eat well, but seem to have no appetite so it's not easy. Someone said you're supposed to be eating at least 2200 calories a day to recover properly but no way can I manage that, despite all the exercises, walking and gym. I'm trusting it will all settle down with time!
Weight losss???? I wish...
The opposite for me ....I have put weight on as I am not as active as I was before.... altho am walking dog couple miles a day, but not mucking out horse AND my diet has not altered at all...cooking for one, meals tend to be rather sameish and I mainly eat fish, not a veggie but not a meat fan either.
If your taking pain meds they tend to take away appetite.
Unfortunately for me I couldn't exercise ad much I food and gained 24lbs in six months.I started diet Nov 22 down 16lbs.
I'll be eight months PO next week.last three wks the Physical therapist had done deep deep massage. It hurts awful.
Now I'm seeing progress in that leg.
Prior I couldn't lift up by itself into my mini suv. I had to pick it up.Also when sitting putting on pants I have to hold that leg up. To get dressed. Now I'm beginning to do better. The surgeon wanted to release that muscle from the bone. I couldn't seed doing that.
Thx for all your replies sorry didnt get back to u sooner. I will try and take it easier at work now is aquiet time after xmas so im trying to do some of my exercises at work and have alittle walk too.hope you all continue to get better. Dont think i could eat 2200 cals a day tho lol
Are u the one that sits at work for four hours a day.? If so be careful b/c sittingg causes contraction of muscle and tendons. I have electric bed and had the to up about 20% and omgoodness. It happened to me.
With the muscles shortened getting them that to normal is awful painful.lol
