Pain at 10 months post opp

Hi Im 65 and had a total hip replacment 10 months ago and have a few niggles of pain at the top of the leg bone which Ive tended to ignore.

Today I was in the kitchen and leaned on the worktop to look out of the window and the pain was unbelievable. Im due to see surgeon an May 12th.

Up to now I ve thought how lucky Ive been same leg legnth, no infection clean neat wound no real problems - now im begining to wonder if there is anything amiss where the implant goes into the leg bone.

Any sugestions?

Hi Pete

My only suggestion is that you ring the consultants secretary, explain to her that you have an appointment for the 12th of May BUT ...then tell her what you have told us.

Dont hold back.......and then ask if he can see you sooner because you are in so much pain.  As a last resort ask will they call you if there is a cancellation? but dont mention that until you see if she can get you a date to see him soon.

I've always found the secretarys to be very helpful.

Good Luck

Hello Pete. Prior to my op my surgeon did a diagnostic injection into hip which would throw light on any other issues. He did not wish to perform my op and then have me complain about still being in pain. He was so right as I had a spinal problem which was treated prior to my hip op. Guess not all surgeons do this and to be fair I have osteoporosis so he probably suspected other issues. You may well have another problem unrelated to the hip. Just a thought

Goodness , that does sound worrisome. Has the pain remained unbelievable? If so you really should go to your emergency room if your doctor is putting you off. That said, there are other reasons for pain, it's just that the hip is most obvious. Whatever is causing that pain, you should be seen soon to find out just what the problem is. Hurting without knowing the cause is just so bothersome!!

Hope you are soon tended to and it is something minor. Best wishes.

I was reviewing some older messages and came across yours and thought I would add my two cents....my thr was 7 months ago.  I have had some rocky times that I have written about here on this site but to your pain in your leg ...I went to see my surgeon last week and one of the issues was pain in my operated thigh.  Cannot put any weight on it when it is acting up. Dr. Said that it most likely is the post that is inserted along with the hip.  He said that the leg muscles and bone need to get used to having the post there.  He also said that those that are predisposed to bone deterioration are most likely going to have this problem.  He recommended I walk with a cane and that it may work its way out.  Btw this pain comes and goes, reminds me more of arthritis

Hi

Saw my GP a few days ago and explained what had happened and also told him my 11 month appointment for 12th May had been postponed till 9th June. As I am suposed to be going to Austria on a coach trip for 9 days 23rd May he is trying to get me seen before I go - no luck so far though.

Im a bit concerned the pain may be caused by a crack in the top of the leg bone where the implant goes in because I also have a clunk associated with movment. I very much hope Im wrong.

I think that the people in charge of apps get incentives to screen out patient problem calls.  I had to be very emphatic to get my appt moved up.  When this first started it was just a flash pain but it was so strong that I almost lost my stand.  I don't use pain pills because the pain goes away the minute I take the weight off it.
