Pain in my groin area

After my hip replacement 5 years ago I spent 2 years under the hospital care and then was advised to do either yoga or pilates to keep mobility.  I chose pilates and did very well till the last few months when I began to experience pain in my groin.  Last week this pain became intense about an hour after my class and I was unable to bear weight in the leg unless I was standing upright.  Also I could not lift the leg on it's own but had to use my hands to lift it into bed etc.  My doctor put me on painkillers,  explained the pain in my groin would be from my hip and arranged for me to have an xray.  The painkillers have done just that so I feel okay again now, and beginning to feel like a fraud, though I am concerned the pain may come back when I stop.  I am now wondering what I should do about exercise in the future.  Has anyone else had any similar experiences?

I am years behind you having only had my hip done 3 months ago. I have also been advised to start Pilates and intend doing so on my return from holiday. I would wait for your X-ray results, and possibly ask to see a physio before making any decisions. I find tai chi helps with balance

Agree with maggie - do no more exercises till the result of your xray.

hi Val

sorry to hear that.  As the others have said I wouldn't risk anything until you know more!  But assuming that all is in fact OK, I myself had (like Maggie) been doing T'ai Chi before my hip got too bad (couldn't stand on the now-operated leg on its own) and i'm very much hoping that I'll be going back to this - or possibly Qi Gong - these are very good and less high impact than yoga or pilates.  (Yoga can be very intense and put you in all sorts of positions that are extremely dangerous for a replaced hip! - I've heard some horror stories.  Hospitals don't necessarily realise this - they think yoga is kind of light and fluffy).  Hopefully you just strained a groin muscle.

Good luck and fingers crossed

Neil

Many thanks for the info and good wishes. I have my X-ray on Monday and will hopefully know straight away if there is a problem.

Good evening val I am so sorry to hear this but I had my Sergey done in 2014 both hips now when you are taking about the groan my God I suffer everyday I was okay till I started going to the gym but I was not doing nothing that could hurt myself just normal leg streash and val my groan was so painful I went for my X ray and can you belive that all my muscles have healed very tight I have had no luck with my hip replacement even my back I can't sit on my bottom the pain is bad I have only found out today Al is due to hip replacement sad

Hi Val,

I agree - wait until you get the results of the x-ray -

maybe you just pulled a muscle - take it easy until then -

Please let us know how you are getting on ..

have a good night and be gentle with your self tomorrow

warm hug

Hi Sharon

I am also too tight and have all your symptoms.

I asked my consutlant for a second opinion and we got 2

Both said the femoral head used is too big which means I am "jacked out and up" thererfore all muscles held tight and no amount of exercise will help.

Hopefully having it revised - they can swap this part out easily - in the autumn. Definitely worth chasing up a second opinion. Its only a bit too big but in the context of a hip then 3 or 4 mm wrong makes a big difference.

Take care

Chris

Christian I want to ask you something when I did my Sergey I was a bit over wait I was 13 stone I am now 9 stone and I am so tight in the groan the pain is ban but do you think it is to do with the weight lost

That is probably you Psoa muscle. You may have pulled it exercising. In your place I would wait a good 2/3 weeks before I did exercises that used that muscle. And if it hurt again after restarting I would then wait another full month. Tendinitis is little rips and tears into the tendon, doing stretch exercises just make the tears deeper. What you want to do instead is lay off it and let them heal up. If you keep aggravating it you can have this become a permanent condition, tendonosis, not tendinitis. Trust me I had tendonosis of my IT BAND WHICH IS A TENDON THAT RUNS ON THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR KEG FROM THE HIP TO THE KNEE. Oops sorry caps lock, damned iPaf
