Pain in other leg after Hip Replacement

Hi. I had a hip replacement 7 months ago and i have been experiencing pain around the knee/quadricep in the good leg over the last 2 months or so. The pain has been minimized at the moment due to inflammation tablets.

Is it common to have pains on the non operated leg at this stage?

Hi Daniel,

I haven't had the problem but was warned it might occur by my surgeon he did say it could occur on either leg?. I was told it was due to the realignment of muscles. So within two weeks of surgery I was in the gym doing a few kilos (2 to be exact.) of leg extensions. I am week 7 and push around 7 kilos now (I had the anterior method) I was advised this exercise by the gym instructor. I had annoying initial pains in my thigh muscles and had acupuncture which worked very well. Try warm beaanie bags/hot water bottles to relieve the muscles some TLC?

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. I have started cycling and am arranging for some physio.

Hi Daniel

I had my hip replacement surgery in November and suffered greatly with knee pain. I still have some residual pain in both knees but I am working at exercising the leg muscles especially that I am due to have the other replaced shortly. It will go in time. I use pain killers to control it.

Hi daniel - i had a little bit of this after my right hip replacement due to the 1 inch discrepancy between the two legs.  Do you know if your legs are even length?

Daniel: This is the very issue I was also hoping to find some answers on.  I had THR on my right hip this past December (4 and a half months ago) and while I do still have pain on the operated side, I am noticing more pain on my non-operated hip/ side. I don't know if that is due to the more minor arthritic damage also seen on the XRay for that hip, and if its worsening now on its own, or if my muscles are all realigning, left and right side, due to the new hip. I'm trying to get out and walk more, but not clear if I'm adding to the 'wear and tear' on the other hip now.  Would appreciate anyone's perspective on this-- have you found a lot of realigning of muscles such as this?
