Pain in right hip

I had a lhr last May and have been very pleased with the results… pain in that hip gone. A few issues because of leg length difference, but all in all a much better situation than before surgery. Just recently though I have had some pain in my right hip. It is gradually getting worse, though not as bad as left hip was yet. My replacement was due to arthritis in my hip. I am worried that the right hip is now going the same way as the left. The symptoms are the same, but it seems to be progressing faster. Would like to hear from others with arthritis, maybe give me an idea as to what may be happening? Have any of you had the same situation? I am 63 years old and quite healthy otherwise.

Hi..yes I have almost identical issues as you..I’m just not ready to go through surgery..good luck

I have the same problem, they do say hips go in twos!

I hope it doesn’t get too bad before I retire. A year and a half to go. Really don’t want more time off for illness before then.

Thank you for your replies. It does help to know we are not alone in this.

Have you had a total bone scan yet, it shows up everything!!! I had a fall a year ago but I’ve just had the scan. I have osteoporosis in my ankles, knees thigh, wrists and lower back…lol. If you have had a previous fracture it can be bulk billed by medicare in Australia. Im not in any pain and rarely have been,so finding this out came as a surprise. Im 64.

I have never had a total bone scan. Just xrays. The only bone Ive ever broken is my nose…My problem is osteoarthritis. I am in Canada and we do have pretty good health care. They wouldn’t replace my last hip until I was bone on bone. I went through a lot of severe pain for a year and a half before I was finally approved for surgery. That is what bothers me most… But I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

Hi. Are you taking vitamin D and calcium supplements?? These will help with your osteo arthritis as at our age the calcium storage in our bones are depleted.

No, but thanks for the advice. I am going to try that.

I think vit D and calcium help with osteoporosis which is the bones rather than osteoarthritis.

Hi Linda,

Going through the replies to Carol, I noticed your reply re: calcium.

I do not know obviously if you have looked into bone building but, magnesium builds bone inside, calcium outside therefore, if you only have calcium it does not stop brittle bone as the inside is like a sponge with holes. Too much calcium can block arteries normally, having milk on cereal, tea coffee, yogurt should be enough calcium, the most important is magnesium. Magnesium is needed by over three hundred functions in the body, it stops restless legs and cramps.

Hope you do not mind my input on this subject but, after learning about magnesium four years ago, I will always encourage taking magnesium.

Some people use weight jackets to help the bones too. I do know several people who have improved their bone density scores by really working at it without taking bisphosphonates.

Get it checked out because 9 times out of 10 its arthiritis

As with me, Ive never had symptoms of either, so I was unaware I had osteoporosis. Even so,it’s a good idea to take both even as a precautionary measure.

Hi. Yes, I was taking magnesium. Only stopped all my over the counter meds for a blood test for my thyroid levels. But my levels were still below normal a couple of months ago. So, I will go back to taking them again. I did sleep better as well while taking them!!! Thanks for the advice anyway.

I actually talked to my pharmacist after researching this and he said the same thing. I am starting on glucosamine to see if that helps.

Thank you. I was taking magnesium for leg cramps right after surgery. I stopped when I started feeling better.

Hi ptolemy,

A friend was told back in the late 90s she had osteoporosis and was prescribed fosamax. She took this constantly for over twenty years only to be told it had made no difference at all, needless to say she stopped taking it. I totally agree weight bearing is far better along, of course with magnesium.

In fact your friend was probably worse off than taking nothing!
