Pain in the left ankle. Can my fibroids be causing this?

I am 31 years old with two sons and recently found out that I have 3 large fibroids. During the past year my periods became very heavy and I had quite a few accidents during the period. I think I am a bit young for a hysterectomy which was the first word out of my doctor's mouth. I am looking for other options that I can explore as I hope to have another child someday. Ladies can you give me some feedback? Also, I was told to try adopting a vegetarian diet can anyone share how effective this has been for them?

Hi Tricia,

Hysterectomy should be your last resort rather than first option. Alternatives are Uterine Artery Embolisation (although may not be as effective with large fibroids), courses of hormone suppressants like Esmya or a Myomectomy (remove fibroids save uterus).

I am currently nearly two weeks post a abdominal myomectomy for two large fibroids (19cm & 11cm). I discussed my options at length with my consultant and whilst hysterectomy was the much easier operation for him, he respected my wishes. The operation was thought to be a complex one due to proximity to blood vessels on the MRI, however when they opened me up it was much simpler.

It is worth you doing your own research into the options and having a clear idea of what you want or more specifically what you don't want, before your next consultation. And getting a second opinion is a sensible think to do.

In terms of your ankle pain, I wouldn't be surprised is large fibroids are compressing nerves somewhere to cause that, however worth checking with your GP as very easy to blame fibroids for everything!

Good luck!

I was facing the same thing, l had 20 large fibroids removed l found a good doctor. She was able to save my uterus. She put me on lupron injection, you might need to consider that. I still lost 3litres of blood and it was a dangerous surgery. You might need to consider shrinking them first and raise your blood count.
