Hi everyone, hope you are all doing well. A little background, I am 58 yo female, 5 months post-op on right THR. Was in fairly decent shape aside from severe osteo-arthritis before this. During my replacement (lateral), they had problems popping the ball out and I ended up with nerve damage. It was bad enough I had no use of my quad after the surgery (as well as one of my hip muscles) for more than three months post. Everything finally started working again and I have a lot more feeling in the leg (numb from ankle to above knee). The problem is with the feeling returning, I have constant pain in the top half of my thigh (front). For a while I thought it might be bone pain from the prothesis but I am becoming more convinced it is pain from the quadricep.
Has anyone else experienced nerve damage that as it was healing (and it is healing) there was pain from it?
I had a FRHR done about 8 months ago. I can tell you that pain in the mid - top of the thigh is perfectly normal until the bone completely grows around the metal that's been inserted into the femur. At 8 months post op, I rarely have that pain anymore. My surgeon told me to allow up to 12 months for the bone to completely heal.
Hello Tamara! Yes I too am suffering with thigh pain, numbness and just so much discomfort especially when something touches it. It started out so so but gradually got worse. Dr prescribed lyrica but insurance would not pay for it so switched it to gabapentin. That seemed to help some but not for long so called dr again and he prescribed voltaren which I apply to my thigh. That seems to help some, especially with the pain. I'm also applying Aspercream for the sensitivity. It's been a roller coaster ride with this. I'm not sure what's really causing this. If it wasn't for this, things would be pretty good. But this is so discouraging for me. It really affects my life. I spend time in bed either icing or heating. I know the therapist said there is a large nerve that runs under the thigh muscle on top and along the side. That's where a lot of my pain is. I hope all gets better for you soon. Hugs 🤗. LD
Oh I'm 8 months in from a total hip revision. I dislocated my first right hip replacement. Was 6 weeks non weight bearing and no hip flexion past 80 degrees and no hip exercises. I believe that hindered my recovery. Cause once I was weight bearing again dr diagnosed me with bursitis and tendonitis. Again good luck 🍀 and if you see dr about this let us know how you are doing. Hugs 🤗 LD
all I had was electrified boots, oh and drop foot, felt like diebetic nerve pain, without the diabetes, I've been told. I as of yet, 17yrs. post op. have not developed diabetes and prosthetic seems to be as good as ever. Broke hip 12/17/77(start of opiate RX)-LTHR-2000-as of 2/15/17-off of opioids, trying Lyrica 150mg per. seems to get rid of the electrical shock feeling, pain and stiffness still not so good but....2/15/17 I went to the ER coz I broke my arm falling down, clean breqak, nothing gross, pain but didn't need narcotic pills just been smokin weed and playing World of Tanks. Took caste off 3/24/17 as of now about 80%, range of movement ok, but strength, gotta work on. Best part bout no more OPIATES, my insides work like clockwork, you eat or drink and it moves at whatever pace it's supposed to and knocks and says, Hey we gotta go 1 or 2 hurry up, well since I stopped opiates it's a lot easier to hold what ever business I gotta do till I decide to do it, kinda cool. Oh and sinse my feet aren't on fire any more, I can sleep, I've been almost completely returned to a normal 3 cycle day. Man Opiates (60mg x 4 daily) for 40 yrs and it just stopped working one day, did not feel effects, especially the constipation, or lack there of, like I said guts started to work normally, even with that high dose, my body felt like it didn't recognize the morphine after so many years. brain freeze.
Hope your journey has less drugs than mine, good luck, life can still have its moments
warm welcome to this hippies forum ... so sorry to hear about your pain -
have you seen your surgeon about this and was the diagnosis nerve damage?Sometimes deep aches in the hip and femur can persist for a long time because bone, a living tissue, continues to re-model and adapt around the metal implants.
with increased activity it can lead to increased soreness and even swelling -
How are you doing otherwise ? Are you walking unaided ?
Are you taking pain medication? do you see a physical therapist ?
There are so many reasons for soreness, discomfort and pain -
I hope you will have it checked and please come back and let us know, okay?
