I have been on cocodmel for a few months but was not really working have in a spoke to doctor now trying tramadol 50mg /100mg 4 times a day feel my tired but not sleeping very well is this the tramadol ? Pain may be a bit better but still there what are other people on have not had op yet but am bone on bone
Carol......dont think there is any such thing as a pain killer.....more like pain dullers
I can only tell you how meds affected me.....I have no medical training
I was put on tramadol for the first time after my first THR and I was spaced out but I thought that was just because of operation and I hadnt recovered properly.
If hubby hadn't been helping me with tablets then I wouldnt have had a clue.
The consultant took me off them at the 6 week visit. After that the GP put me on them for pain {some time later} and I got the same spaced out feeling so came off them
I've never been on cocodamol......I'm on paracetamol and codeine as needed
I prefer that.....2 different tablets so I can take less of one of them {usually the codeine} if I want to......so can jiggle them about a bit.
I'm sure others will be on to give their opinions
Love
Eileen
Hi Carol
Doc put me on tramadol before I had my Hip replacement for the pain. I felt constantly sick (but never was) and could'nt sleep much, when I did I was having bad bad dreams. I came off them and just took paracetemol. Felt alot better. You must decide which is the lesser of two evils, - less pain no sleep, or sleep and a bit more pain.
Good luck
Cath
My Gp put me on a course of gabapentin 3x3 daily along with paracetamol that helped with some of the pain.
We have Tramacet here in Canada (Tramadol & acetemophen). It works great fo me, no effects except less paiin and a general feeling of relief. I'm hyper annd it does not make me nervous, edgey or anything. Just better. I usuually try to just take 1/2 a 375mg pill but usually need a full pill if I'm uncomfortable. For sleeping it helps if the issue is discomfort but if I'm mentally not able to sleep I need to use a 1/3-1/2 of a Zoplicone pill and that works like a charm.
Hoping to not need any darn pills once I properly recover from the surgery
Get the operation and all of the pain leaves. I had both hips replaced. Doc didnt know how i was walking..bone on bone. I took pain meds for one and half weeks aftet surgery then stopped. That may not be the norm...i only took aspirin before op..lots of it. Good luck
The dreaded pain dullers!
I was put on oxycodone for 2 days afte my opp - standard practice for hospital.
Mix this with Tramadol ( you are lucky if you can take it without getting high).
Only problem was I had been on all sorts of pain meds for years and nothing worked.
It was only the sharp eyes of a Staff Nurse that I was in agony - she came and talked to me and got the Pain Managment team to see me next day at 9 am.
Put back on Oxycodone and sent home with it after a who ha with the despensary as its a controled drug and also put on Tramadol which is also now back on the controled register. Add Oramorph if needed. and I was somewhere near pain free.
GP was not too happy I was sent home with only 7 days supply and Dispensary at local Chemist made my Wife sign drugs register when she collected prescription.
Only problem Oxycodone is adictive even at 10 mg every 12 hours and I had a problem getting off it. The only problem for those on codeine try to get a Docusate sodium capsule 100mg to go with it so you dont get bunged up.
11 weeks post opp and now need very little meds and can manage short distances on no sticks.
Hang in there
Hi Carol
sorry to hear of your oain
my experience with tramadol was aweful but everyone is different. It does have side effects such as feeling spaced out and nauseous. I went on to panadol and voltarin suppositories which is working for me. Your pain however sounds a lot more than mine. I think you need to be guided by your doctor and give a few things a try. Best if luck and hang in there.
Sadly I don't take much less pain meds since hip replacement 4 yrs ago....my story is here...
I deal with a lot of bodywide osteoarthritis....I'd need a whole body transplant....it ain't gonna happen....
I tried Tramadol about 3 yrs ago or so, I forget I've tried so much over the years and am totally off the opiads, keep a few that's left in the bottle for a rainy day if that ever happens... The Tramadol did nothing.
I'm never out of pain, I'm more tolerable and probably by now a high pain threashold....
Iburpofen works best for me and I take 2 in late morning and 2 before bed and with my sleep combo I sleep GOOD. I take DGL for stomach protection and so far so good. This is a licorice otc supplement to line the stomach.
In between these 2 doses of Ibuprofen, I take 2 Pain RX and 1/2 tylenol which lasts me about 6 hrs of more comfort. Pain RX is an herbal pain remedy,
I also take 1 tsp of MSM powder in a glass of water 3 times a day and this dulls some pain.
I take a LOT of supplements and again probably have a higher pain threshold after all these years with OA.
I'm in the U.S. and LOVE my supplements to keep me going. j
Sorry to hear of your pain.i too have osteoarthritis. Had both hips replaced and worry abt the knees. Im 59 and half bionic. Like you i dont wish to have more done. Keeping my fingers crossed and taking vitamins.

Can't tolerate most opiates or opioids so was on anti-emetics while I was using the stronger pain killers post-op. Pre-op, as well as paracetamol and ibuprofen, I used TENS which helped me but doesn't help everyone \nd 10mg amitriptyline at night which is an anti-depressant at higher dose but also acts as a pain killer on a different pathway. Amitriptyline doesn't suit everyone, I felt spaced out for a couple of days but that became manageable although I did miss it out if I had to drive early in the morning. 20mg didn't suit. It did help with sleeping for a couple of years.
Post-op this time I took Acupan (Nefopam) which I can tolerate or you could try one of the NSAIDs but docs are getting less willing to prescribe them long term for osteoarthritis.
I hope you are at least considering surgery,
Hi Carol,
Be careful with tramadol. I took it for about 2 years. Lost 15 kg, moods up and down , crazy sweats, very poor sleeping and that of course make me sleep till afternoon , first I used to get high like after my all energy and mood uses to go down. So got depressed. Also addicted if I use to have kinda painfree day and try not to take it, and honestly I use to feel terible , and couldn't go sleep without taking one.
So if you do have to take, try to be careful . If you can get different med go for it. The only painkillers helpd me was tramadol, and I am allergic to morphine so I have to stick to it.
Best of luck
K
Plus edgy, nervous paranoid like and sick too!
Have been having crazy sweets already and sleeping has changed would mind the weight loss lol my daughter been taking it for 2 years and say she can't sleep
Lol I didn't mind too , but it was too drastic I couldn't eat as I was feeling sick nauseous all the time.
Just try to be careful as it really can mess up with you.
Now I'm almost 4 months post THR and still take oxycodone witch I find ok. As I take only 1 a day.
After surgery I took 1 every few hours so I felt really sleepy.
Hi Carol I too was bone on bone, prior to my op. I was originally on Ibuprofen which wasn't very effective. My doctor then prescribed Naproxen and, for me, it was amazing! The pain practically disappeared and no side effects. Unfortunately, my surgeon made me stop taking them for 2 weeks prior to my THR as he said it would lessen blood loss during op so I was just on paracetemol for those 2 weeks. Think he just wanted me to be even more appreciative of the result post op!!
Hi Carol, Its hit and miss I'm afraid as we are all different. Tramadol made me feel spaced out (bad dreams) and I slept alot. Gave that up and now take co-codamol along with amitriptyline which is used as a muscle relaxant. I also tried Gabapentin but this did nothing for me. I am sure once you have had your operation things will improve and I wish you all the best for the future.
Hi Pat
Naproxen is a blood thinning agent.
I hadn't realised this until one night I had a very blad nose bleed.
It was streaming....couldnt get it to stop so rang for advise and after finding out I was on Naproxen said to stop those for a few days as they would make it worse.....then a few other tips.
Thats the first I realised that it did that.....I always thought of warfarin as the blood thining drug
Love
Eileen
Eileen, Naproxen raises blood pressure, it contains a high sodium and it probably raised your BP and hence the nose bleed. I can't take it as I'm on BP meds to manage higher BP.
St. Johns Wort did the same thing as I was taking it for some time for depression BEFORE I had my thyroid fixed which took 10 lousey years....once the thyroid got supported the 10 yr depression was gone....
But this herb raises BP and I did get a bloody nose once and then started my research.....
My best bet is Iburprofen and Pain RX herbal, and DGL for stomach protection...
