Pain management

Hi hippies / hippies to be!

In a lot of pain, still awaiting my date for op, was on naproxen, these are no longer gelping( was taking paracetamol too).

Been to doctors Wednesday, was given a script for co codamol.... Taking the max dose. Just made another appointment to see if I can get anything to help!

What did you guys take/ do to help with pre op pain?

Thanks

Tramadol would help Linzh ~ that is what I am taking. Slow release is best.

Sorry to hear yr in pain I too was in loads of pain have been give slow release morphine patches they work really well. I have my opp on 21st may so not long to wait. Hope u feel better soon.

Hi Linzh, I was given co dydramol and when they didn't work my doctor gave me dihydrocodeine, 2 four times a day and also 2 paracetamol four times a day. Only problem with dihydrocodeine is they can be habit forming.  I am now down to 1 four times aday and hopefully soon won't need them anymore. Good luck with your op.

Hi Linzh

I take co-dydramol 10/500 during the day and tramadol 50mg + Paracetamol 1000mg at night. GP did not like this as they think I'm too stupid to realise that I can't take them all together but having convinced them that I only take the co-dydramol during the day and only take the tramadol/paracetamol combo at night with at least 4 hours between, I find this works well - the tramadol were too strong to take during the day and the co-dydramol not strong enough for a good night's sleep. I find there is a knock-on effect so it is important to take whatever you get regularly, even if the pain isn't too bad or not there at all. Firmly believe that its easier to prevent pain than cure it.

Hope this helps. xx

Hi Linzh,

I am awaiting my hip op, I was taking codeine and paracetamol but the pain was so bad couldn't walk at all. Went to doctor and she said keep on those two but added naproxen twice a day and orimorph 5mg at nitght. She also gave an anti sickness pill for the nausea that the last two pills were making me feel. So far these have worked and I feel a lot happier with myself, but still can't wait to have the op and get pain free altogether and get rid of the pills.

Hi linzh! Poor you! There is nothing worse than being in pain! It must be awful! Have you got your date for hospital yet? I did mine through choose and book. I had my op in march right hip! Will have knee done at some point! But in no rush as I have chronic anxiety as well! I am also a carer! Regards Amanda

Hi Linzi

I took co-codamol post op (Im 15 weeks post RTHR) and am taking it again for my left hip until i get can get an op date to get this done too. It takes a while for your body to get used to new drugs but obviously I cant know what level of pain you have or what your pain threshold is. My advice though is to take care taking meds such as Tramadol. I was on this post op and for the first 4-5 weeks I felt great and it worked really well, no pain and felt very upbeat but please be aware that it is a strong opoid and can be difficult to stop taking them when you are ready to do this. Even though I only took one tab x 4 times a day it was pretty awful for 5-6 days when i came off them (gradually). Again dont want you to be in pain just want you to be aware of possible side effects and what happens when you come off them.

Take care and hope your pain lessens.

Hope you get your date soon, it's not good being in pain. I was on Gabapentin & morphine patches but they didn't make much difference.

13 weeks post op now & I have my life back.

Hi linzh

I was already on meloxicam twice a day an anti inflammatory.

I was also on paracetamol plus 8 a day until may last year when I was prescribed co-codomol 8 a day which i was on until my op 23rd Jan. Now none. Hooray !

Sorry Linzi that should have said:

I took co-codamol PRE op (Im now 15 weeks post RTHR) .........

Just been prescribed morphine..... Hmmm.... Let's see if that helps... Thanks all xx

I had Morphine (post op) in hospital and had to take antihistamine as it made my skin itch and it can make you feek sick. But if it helps your pain .......  It would be good if they could give you an op date soon.

Hi Kaye I'm having my op on 22nd May in St. Albans where are you?

Hi Caroline, I'm in Harlingon middx. Having opp in Hillingdon but after they transfer you to mount vernon.

Pre-Op I was taking double strength tylenol or acetaminophin and at the busiest time of my day or When the Pain Was Unbearable, I'd take Hydromorphone.  Took away the pain while I was away at work!

I was prescribed Tramadol, it worked a bit better for me

Hi Linzh, I am also on Naproxin, been on they three years now,500mgs twice a day, they build up in your system, I take one every 10 to 12 hrs and I use 2, 50mg Tramadols every 4 to 5 hrs and as the overlap time finishes the pain comes back, and then becomes more bearable, I know it is almost unbearable at times I hope that you are like me and have good days and bad moments even in good days, just stay on top of the painkillers and things should improve.....

Hope that helps, I go for my first operation next Sat...so I am optimistic that things should be better come Xmas...Hope that helps...

Kind regards Ian.

I was taking Vicodin prior to surgery for not only my  hip pain but also for the pain in my other joints (OA) as well.

Some days it worked, some days it didn't.

I was on Oxycodone, Aspirin and Celebrex after my THR.

I now take Oxy  twice a week before my Physical Therapy.

Celebrex is a wonder drug!!!

I had no OA pain at all but now that I'm off them, my old arthritic body is back.

Oh well at least I remembered what it felt like before Arthritis

Thank you Ian! Good luck on sat x
