I had THR on 6/1615 and still on meds every 4 hrs.I would like to wean off but is still to much.Any idea how long pain meds need to be taken? Surgery went well and swelling is all but gone and scar is healing, just a little ball I can feel so even that is going down. Good luck to all the hips out there!
No expert but would say listen to your body. All of us have suffered the pain and probably tried like me to stay off the pain meds but not this time.
I was on pain meds every 4 hours for 2 weeks after I came home from the hospital. Then I tapered down to once a day, then I only took them when I went to PT. I still take them when I need to go shopping or something because I have OA in all of my joints but my right hip feels wonderfully.
Just take them when you need to take them as your doctor prescribed. Pretty soon you won't need them at all!
Good luck to you!
Hi there
I had my op on 10th June. Stopped taking pain melds during the day a week ago - just odd occasions during the day when I sometimes feel a bit achy I may take a couple
Still take co co codamol at night to help me sleep - hip pain much better at night now, just discomfort from lying on back
Don't try to be brave if you need to take something then take it
Everyone is different and there is no set time scale for anything
Glad you are doing well
Linda xx😻😻
Hi Tinner ... as said, there is no set time - you will be the judge - just try it and see how your body feels - it is better (I think) to have no pain and be able to move than in pain and not ... of course there is also the middle road --
good luck ...and welcom to the hippies club -
take care Tinner - warm hug

everyone is different and you take the pain meds as long as you need to
I took pain meds 4 Times a day for the first 3 weeks then weaned down to 2 a day then as needed. I'm 17 weeks out now and back to work. I still have some left but only take if I'm having a bad leg day which is not often
My op was 18th June so I'm two weeks post op
all the suggestions made I agree with.
I take them if I overdo it. I take them if I am in pain. I don't take them so much during the day now ( cocodamol/ibuprofen ). As far as I am concerned if you need them, take them, I was worried about getting addicted, but reducing them does not seem to have any side effects on me so far.
Listen to your body, if you feel you don't need them leave them out, but don't suffer it's not worth it!
I don't think that I will ever cut them out at night though as I have arthritis in my spine, and that gives me the help I need
giid luck. Carol x
Hi Tinner,
My first two weeks were the worst. Everyone is different concerning when to stop the pain meds. I believe that for me, I taper off around the three week mark with every kind of surgery I have had and usually by the fifth week I am off of the pain meds.
This might not work for everyone, but when the pain pill makes me feel itchy or sick, then I know not to take them any more. My body knows when it has had enough. I keep them and have plenty left, but now take one here and there and like to have them for emergencies, but it has to be real pain for me to even consider taking them.
You do what is right for you. The pain meds play a role in your recovery by allowing you to move about with less pain and moving about is critical to the success of your surgery.
