Pain & movement after MUA

Thank you all again for all your support. It has really been invaluable. At 10 weeks post TKR I had manipulation, 2 days ago. My doc showed me a picture of my leg bent all the way (maybe at 130 degrees). I know I have to work very hard now & am going to PT daily, ad well as doing exercises on my own. Also, they sent me home with a CPM machine, which I use twice a day.

What I don't understand is my bend on my own is about the same as it was before the manip (about 95). I thought it would be more. Also, Ii have terrible pain in my quadriceps muscles, I guess from the stretch.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Hi Terri, glad you had a successful MUA. I believe it is usual to lose some of the bend again right after, due to swelling and the fact that your muscles and tendons are still not used to working at this new level yet.

You are lucky to have the extra physio and CPM machine. I only had the CPM for the night after the procedure and PT only 2x week though I have to do exercises at home round the clock.

They only manipulated my leg to 95 deg  from the 60 deg it had stuck at, I guess it sepends on the starting point. But I have got to 110 since on my own. However, it is a constant battle and I feel the knee tightening up all the time!

I have invested in some sports physio to help with aqua treadmill and oscillation therapy. I think these are helping the most.

I'd say, just keep doing as your PT show you and persevere with the CPM and all should improve as the swelling subsides and the muscles become stronger. I still have LOTS of swelling and the knee is still uncomfortable all the time BUT it no longer needs painkillers as it is manageable. Best of luck in your recovery!

Thanks Cynthia. Best of luck to you as well.
