Pain on load bearing immediately after getting up

Hi,

Background:

I had a right side femoral neck fracture 2 years ago, which was repaired with a dynamic hip screw, and a THR around 5 months ago after the repair failed (no evidence of AVN apparently - just non-union of the bone).

I have an underlying condition - semi-paralysis of the right side and general lower body neuropathic pain - as a legacy from treatment for lymphoma in 2006.  This disability was the reason for the fall that caused the hip fracture.

Anyway, my recovery from the THR has been uneventful and unremarkable.  I graduated from a crutch to a walking stick a month or so back and my mobility is pretty much back to where it was before the fall.

There is just one issue...

When I get up in the morning or get up from the couch, or from the chair at work, I get quite severe pain on weight bearing.  The pain is pretty much at the site where I imagine the titanium "spear" has been driven into the top of the femur (though I realise that pain can be referred from elsewhere), and I also get pain in my knee.

After 30 seconds of walking around the pain is gone, and I can get about without the stick.

I'm not due to see the ortho until August and I'll have an x-ray and ask him, but I was wondering if anyone had a comment to make?

Considering all the complicated and complex proceedures you have been thru with THR has involves, your post is very encouraging and summer is around the corner . There is the mobility factor to consider and sometime weight bearing can be a pain .try to put a pillow in the seat of all chairs , cuz bending over while getting up can be premature for some and time to heal the joint area muscles tendons and the components takes time for the body to adjust. I still keep cushions in all my fav spots to sit and try to sit in loungers rather the 90' sitting position. had revision in 2017. In time you will be back in business . 😊

Hi,

I hope you continue well with your recovery. I know you've had a lot of work done but most people with hip replacement complain of tenderness at the hip joint on getting up after resting or out of a car and on getting up in the morning. I'm still getting it at 9 weeks post op but it is getting less by the week. I still hobble for about 30 metres after getting out of the car.

Good luck

Tony

Oh yes, no-one tells you, but this seems to be fairly normal.

Just for the first step or two, then everything frees up and off we go.

I still get it at over 2 years THR

OK, seems as if it's normal.  I can live with that.  Many thanks to the respondents.
