Pain on outside of TKR knee

Hi all,   am 5 weeks post opp of TKR, am doing ok  but a question to you all, this morning i had the worst pain since my opp, as i was sat and tryed to turn, this pain like a stabbing pain came on ,at the outside of my tkr  knee, i could,nt bend or straighten it for a abit till the pain eased off. has anyone else had this or any one no what it could be,  similar pain has been there since the start but no way as bad , just thought the pain was part of the recovery .  many thanks Brian

Brian...I'm due very soon for a TKR. Could you tell me what to expect as far as. The first 5 days out; will i be able to walk the dog, take a shower, etc and any other insights you could share.

Thanks!

It could be the nerves returning back to normal (as the saying goes no pain no gain) - I get short sharp electric shocks all over my knee and shin and foot luckily not all in one hit. If you are worried even just a smidgeon please see your GP they are there to help.

Hi Brian, not something I have experienced but then this op gives us all wide and varied challenges. I would possibly speak to the hospital for peace of mind just in case a dislocation has incurred.

I had TKR 3 years ago and I remember having this at more or less the same stage as you are now. Don't worry about it. It is just that you are exercising a bit more and working hard at physio. It will settle down.

Sarah

Hi David,  for the first 5 days and many more you just need rest,  as many say on this forum  Meds, Sleep when you can, rest and as much Phsyio as you can handle. you might be one of the lucky ones and able to walk (the dog)  early on ,  as for showers thats normaly a no no  till the stapples come out ,( i had a bath after day  4  but be very carefull getting in and out and keep opp leg out of the water )  my experience after the opp  was a big shock, am a 56 year old bloke  quite fit  due to my job, (postman ) not being big headed , but had a good pain fresh hold , but the opp is a very very big opp  it does take it out of you you do have pain , good days and bad days , cant real comment on how it will be 6 months down the road , but reading other post every one is different . some feel great early on but others still have problems 12 months on.    hope all goes well with your opp and your recovery is quick,  keep in touch if you need any more info.

Hi Brian I am at the same stage as you. I thought I was doing

very well pain wise.Yesterday I tried my bike for the first

time. Boy did I suffer after. Physio said just a little bit at a

time. That's all I did. Now today have got a tingling feeling

all round the knee.I am not doing exercises today until it

settles. Plus I am going to my daughter's to a BBQ later. That

Should be Interesting as I am usually shattered by 6.00.x

.

Thanks Peglegbev    was thinking the same, as for the shocks you have all over your knee,   i had the same  up untill the stapples came out and up to 3 1/2 weeks  mine have gone now and all i get is a numb feeling to touch around the new , hope you to a quick recovery .

I've had a similar pain before a few times now (I'm 13 weeks). I did ask my Doctor about it and was told that I had significantly more nerve damage than normal (as they operated twice). He didn't look too closely but said it was most likely the nerve feeling kicking back in (he's obviously not a specialist though).

I had a bad throbbing pain yesterday but I think this was muscle pain as I know I over did it on my exercises. Took several hours for me to get the leg moving again. I've been told I need to get my knee cap moving so I've been trying my best. It's led to shooting pain around there too.

I think we've just been through that much trauma, new pains are going to appear all the time. We're obviously doing concentrated stretches and exercises, working these more than they've done in years.

If the pain continues or increase best to get it checked out.

Thanks Carol,   ill see over the weekend if i can still do my Physio at home, if not ill have to get it checked out .  hope all is well

Thank you Sarah,  that is a positive post   BIG thanks x

Hi Joan   same here,  eurovision  BBQ,  (sad hey )  am the same shattered early evening  so cant see  me staying long

Thank you Kathryn,   i agree with all that you have said,  had  back surgery 14 years ago which i had big Siatica  problems then, so yeah its all the nerves , x

Have to compare notes tomorrow Brian see who stayed longest.

Can't have a drink either so bit boring. X

Its the nerves, the numbness might not wear off as quick as you expect.  Meds, exercise, ice and if needed heat. Keep doing this and you will be OK.

10 weeks po but today feels wonderful..............trying not to overdo it and rest when I can.    Got new books on my kindle so going to enjoy some quiet time. Manage to do 3 x 5 mins on exercise bike each day and my knee feels good. Got to try for 3 x 10 mins by middle June.

Thank you Hazel,   enjoy your new books, sounds if your one of us that is doing fine,,  hope your improvement continues x

Thanks Brian very much.

Is the surgery an "out-patient" process...i.e., do you go home immediately afterwards or do they keep you in hospital for a few days or send you to a nursing/rehab home to recover?

Hi David,    its normally a 3 to 5 day stay in hospital, depending on how surgery went, they look to get you out of bed on the second day (as they did with me ) Physio will come on the second day give you a few exercisers to do ,  3/5 times a day,  and they look for a 90% bend in your leg and a straight leg lift befor you can go home ,   lol  which is very very hard to do,

plan nothing ! all you will be able to or want to do is rest eat take meds etc,I wasnt able to shower due to issues with staples but most people are able to if you can get in and out, the dog has had it ! you need a dog walker ! when you feel grim just remember that it will pass, days 2 and 3 are the worst but you will come through it. Use this forum it will help get you through, good luck and stay in touch

so late ! I only manage till about 3, you are doing brill, enjoy barbie. Best wishes
