Pain relief before surgery

Hello again, can I ask what pain relief everyone used before surgery?

I'm currently on gabapentin 3 times a day, co codomol at bedtime and naproxen, pain is still unbearable at times.

Thanks

I had Tramadol.

Wow, that is a lot of painkilkers. I only took the occasional paracetamol as I have always exercised and believe exercise controls pain. Maybe if you started using an exercise bike or better still an elliptical walker they are non weight bearing, it may help your pain

Before surgery I had to give up exercise as I could not leave the house and was in a wheelchair and had bone on bone. Using an exercise bike or elliptical walker would have been impossible and if possible unbelievably painful. I even had to give up swimming as I was unable to walk to the pool. Since my Op I was given Tramadol which I did not need and also paracetamol. I took paracetamol for about three days after my op and then stopped. I am not sure I needed it or not. I can now go back to exercise slowly and happily.

I'm pretty active, I don't drive, therefore I walk everywhere. I'm still working 4 evenings a week as a community carer and I look after my 1yr old grandson in the day plus school runs and looking after the house.

Hi Cherilyn,

i was on Palexia, but now my surgeon has prescribed Skudexa 3 times a day.

I despise taking pills of any sort, and was only taking the Palexia at night, basically with a really cold beer to make me sleep and to ease the pain.

However, the referred pain is so bad now in my knee, calf and ankle, I may start taking the Skudexa. I have been putting off this op for a while, have booked it in for December 17th as I have a fully paid airfare to go to Vietnam again November/December, however the way I feel right now, may move it forward to next month.

perhaps I will go to pharmacy tomorrow!!!

None of that helped me so I take tylenol 3. I take 1 every 12 hours if needed.

I was on meloxicam, paracetamol and codeine at night (only).  By the end of my ‘wait’ for the op (7months) my mobility had taken a bad turn for the worse.  Bone spurs prevented many movements such as cycling... couldn’t walk for more than 10 mins without sticks.... and I’m only in my 50’s.

Still on codeine at night (reduced - sometimes cocodamol) and meloxicam but primarily for psoriatic arthritis. I walked 4.5 miles on Saturday - no sticks!! 9 weeks post op.

Hi

I am taking 1g Paracetomol ×4 daily and 60mg codeine ×4 daily.

I was also take Diclofenic 50mg ×3 daily, but ended up getting H Pylori, for which I needed antibiotics. I met my surgeon for the first time on 30th August and he refused to change my regime. I am to be seen as a matter of urgency, as soon as he has an opening for a posterior hip replacement and as a day case!
