Hi people, its me again. So i was wondering if you guys have an pain relief for me. Im still waiting for my op but lately my pain has become unbareable. I spend most my time just lying in bed because of the pain and if i do do something like go out or housework i will regret it because of the amount of pain it causes. Im currently taking tramadol but trying not to take them to often as i know they can cause addiction. Im also keeping a hot water bottle under my left hip to try and help. Anyone got any other ideas?
I would suggest ice and not heat. If you take the tramadol as instructed I don't think you need to worry about addicton. Some say to use the ice only 20 minutes but rehab said to use as much and as often as u like just don't put on bare skin.. It so I freeze your pain away.
Hahaha oh i do not like the sound of that. Its cold enough here without putting ice on myself. i thought the heat might help as the weather is so cold here and the cold seems to make me worse
Yeah use ice not heat. Your body is inflamed and swollen - ice is what's needed for that. Correct to not put it directly on skin so use a barrier. Also I have a heated throw I wrap around the rest of my body to,help offset that cold.
I also recieved a script for anti-inflammatory - that may help in combination w the Tramadol.
Heat relaxes the muscle ice kills the pain. You can alternate, yes it's getting colder here also although we have had unseasonably warm weather. Bonesmart site would say ice is your best friend, ice, ice, ice...☕
Ohhh i might just have to brave it and try the ice. Its going to be awful though hahaha. Thankyou
Hahaha oh god. I think i might have to go out and find an ice pack in the shops then
Frozen vegies work.
Hahaha my parents dont buy frozen veggies so theres none in the house 😂
Frozen anything, put water in a plastic bag and freeze, cheaper than buying ice paks but whatever works for you, just need to ice it.😃
What about ice cubes in a plastic bag then wrapped in a flannel?
Hi Sarah
As Tramadol not working on my pain, Dr put me on Oramorph. Unfortunately these don't agree with me and causes nausia. Like you I resort to sitting down or bed - any walking causes pain.
Forgot to mention , hot water bottle works wonders.
Yeah iv been using a water bottle regularly. I have to go out tomorrow and im dreading it because i know within 15 mins ill be in agony. I wish there was something i could to to help the pain when i was out to
Hi Sarah ur post sounds like I wrote it. I sympathise completely with u. I'm having my 2nd hip replacement on 29th of January 1st one done 11 weeks ago, but can't cope with the pain any more either. I went to do some xmas shopping today & had to give up after 15 minutes to take pain relief (2parcetemol) as I had taken I prim at 9am along with anti inflammatory but with no relief. I found ice better than heat too. When I'm nice & cosy in bed is when my pains at its worst. Before I had last hip done I tried transfix, Targin, morphine patches, solpadol etc etc etc. The only relief was the op. Right hip is now 100% but left is sooooo bad. I'd say try the ice. Frozen peas in a pillow case. Hope this helps x
Have you tried topical pain relief yet? Something like Nurofen or Ibuprofen. It comes in a tube, and you rub it into where it hurts. Tesco and I think, probably other supermarkets sell their own brand for less. Ask your parents to buy you a packet of frozen peas, wrap them in a tea towel, and then apply them to where it hurts. Heat is not a good idea because it will aggravate the pain more.
Most of all - talk to your GP. If not satisfied then call your consultant....
Your GP may be able to prescribe morphine patches, if nothing else is working, or maybe your consultant can.
Thankyou. I think i will be giving it a go. Hahaha i am genuinely dreading going out tomorrow but it has to be done.im still waiting for my op but iv only been on the list for a month and a half so it could still be a while yet. Hope you will be ok x
I was given a gel from my GP but it didnt worm. Im currently taking tramadol but im not convinced they are working 100% either
Sarah,
I wouldn't be afraid about taking your tramadol. Before my op, that is what I was taking as well, and had no problems at all. Most physicians and therapists will tell you addiction doesn't happen often, and staying on top of the pain is definitely better to do than only taking them when the pain gets bad as it takes more to settle pain down than to manage it.
A lot of hip pain is from inflamation, so you will be happy for the ice, as heat can irritate that part of the pain. Do you have anyone that can run and grab you some ice packs? It won't hurt to have a network in place as you will need one post-op for a week or two for sure.
I live in Minnesota, so agree the extra cold isn't super fun, but honestly, I can't imagine how miserable it would have been, especially post-op, without those lovely gel ice packs from the hospital.
You could also pick up a cane or crutches early, if you really have to get out, and it's miserable for you. Taking the weight off the hip may make it more bearable, and it's a nice visual aide for folks around to to know you're a little vulnerable.
The problem with using a cane or crutches is my age. Because of my age i would feel highly embarressed using a cane because people would look at me like im potty. I know that sounds vein but im a very paranoid person and it would make me so concious.
