Pain / Walk too soon?

Hi. I am 5 weeks post op. I have been walking without assistance for 3 days with some pain. I now have a persistent pain from my right groin, going across and down to my knee. Should I go back to my cane until my pain is gone, or power through.

Hi Angela

I'm just beyond 5 weeks, well in fact it will be 6 on Tues....

Sounds like you've overdone it a bit?  We all need to balance activity with good rest... my suggestion would be that 'powering through' isn't going to help you, and that you might want to rein it in a bit.  The pain can be from your muscles that you've not used for a while / which are on the mend and they won't get better from being beaten up further! Maybe try mixing up a bit of support with a bit of free walking with a good feet up lie-down...

All the best!

Neil

Yes, I agree with Neil, Angela

Maybe doing a bit too much - it always seems to show up in the groin area

Don't battle through - it's not a race or an endurance test. Some activity, plenty of rest with feet up and some support still, particularly when out and about

You are doing good - just take it easy!

Kind wishes Linda xx

Thank you Linda! I will definitely not rush it again. I just need to be patient. Appreciate the feedback! 😊

Hi Angela

I'm heading into week 5 post op and agree with all others feedback. I gauge my progress via the pain the next day in the hip and knee. If it's hurting (bad) in the morning I have a day off. Also I am concentrating more on quality of walking without my walking stick, upright no limp/penguin walk. If I can't walk straight it's back onto the stick. Seems to be working for me as progress is steadily up and up. Geez isn't it hard to be patient and to take it easy?

I would still use your stick for out and about but around the house and in the garden go unaided. I'm 10 weeks in and I still have pain in my knee but it is easing. I have a lot of bother with my back but I think that's just the prowess too. Go with it if you are concerned you can phone your district nurse( but anything like mine don't bother) or the Dr just to put your mind at ease. Your doing well keep it up. X

Hi Angela,

I agree with the others, powering through is fruitless because you end up in more pain and your waking suffers. Rest is as important as movement. If the cane helps then use it on and off.I'll be 6 weeks tomorrow and still have my feet up on the couch for an hour every afternoon.

Good luck in your recovery 🌈💌🌈

Hi Angela,

Ditto al the reponses ... there is no gain in pain with THR, is my motto ... I know for mysel that I have been walking crooked and unbalanced for a while pre surgery and continu to do so when unaided ... I just have to be more mindful about my posture and how I put down my feet ...

be gentle with your self

warm hug

I've been having that same pain thenlast week Angela, but know it's from being a git and planting trees and then this week making a fence. This week, no garden for me aside from some watering it. Should be well again then. Other hip is bothering me enough to already be on the verge of overdoing it for anything outside of the ordinary. Less than three weeks now though and then that one is done too.

Don't rush and shift back a gear when needed 😊

I was told by the phsio at the hospital to always use a cane if needed as it is counter productive to not nuse it and limp. I have found it to be the case as it takes a day or two to settle down if you start to have pain.

Personally I would still use the cane or crutch, even now at 13 weeks if I am going to do a lot of walking then I take my cane 5 weeks is to me is too early to be without a cane

Thank you Renee! I am going to take it slow and easy! I appreciate your feedback!😊

Thank you! I appreciate it!😊

Thank you! I believe I just wanted to recover so fast. I am heading everyone's advise! Thank you for your response!😊

Thank you Heather! I appreciate the feedback! 😊

Yes indeed! I thank you for your response! Great advice! I am certainly going to take heed! 😊

It is more important to walk properly than to walk far.

shoulders back, heel toe. My physical therapist said that the minute you can no longer walk with the right posture stop walking. The thing you want to focus on is walking with excellent posture, a straight back. Distance walking is not your goal at this point, that will come. Focus, focus on posture and when you cannot maintain it you have done enough, quit and take a rest.

my physical therapist did not push endurance, once I could walk without crutches they went in the closet. When I could walk the hallway from my bedroom to the living room with correct posture, and heel then toe I never used crutches again. Of course without crutches that meant I didn't walk very far initially, to start it was just inside the house, then just around my own yard, but all the time with the correct posture. What is the point of walking far using a crutch? You are not developing the muscles that are used without the crutch. Basically you are developing crutch muscles if you think about it. I had a physical therapist 3 time a week for 6 weeks, in my home.

this is what makes this forum great, people from many different countries contribute and on the topics there can be conflicting answers. I recovered in 6 weeks about 90%! at 6 months 95% and at a year 100%. Your mileage may vary,

I saw consultant today 6" weeks post op band he advised still use crutch or stick outside. He says it takes the brain a while to recognise new hip so we care vulnerable to trips etc. If you are in pain you are overdoing it. So go easy on yourself. As someone on here said its not a race.xxx

Yes! Thank you. I have slowed down and gone back to the cane, especially now that I am back at work full time. Thank you for the reply!!😊

Jodi a great post. As one who has had no physio I was trying for distance with a crutch thinking if I could get to local shop and back I'd have my shopping problem solved. But now that I have been given the go ahead to walk independently indoors your post makes so much sense. So it's more walking properly up and down hall and less trying to speed up with crutch.
