i have been on tramadol now for about 6 month just dulls pain a bit . I have had a call to say the nhs are sending me to the Nuffield for the op the problem is my husband is in hospital has been for 2 weeks and I am really struggle with the walking with a stick and the pain it was still bad before all the extra walking and doing everything at home , just don't know what to carry on on tramadol or ask for some else as I hope won't be many more weeks and I hope I have him home this week don't get much sleep either
Oh Carol
You have my sympathy. Thats an awkward position to be in.
For a start I dont think there is such a thing as a pain KILLER, just a pain DULLER. Like you say it dulls the pain a bit.
Why is your husband in hospital? When is he due out? and what sort of recovery will it be for him.....how long? Sorry for the questions.
How far away are they sending you? The sooner you get it done the better but you have a 6 week minimum recovery where you will need help.
Did the hospital say when your appointment would be?
You will need someone to help you when you get home with your bottom half likke putting on socks or shoes. No bending passed the 90 degree angle
Is it possible to talk to the hospital and see what they say about you having the op.
Personally I think you should have it as soon as possible. They dont usually send you home if you are not able to cope afterwards or have no care in place to help.
All hospitals seem to be different I would try and talk to someone there and see what they say.
Good Luck

Hi hope he is out this week he had a cut on his foot and because is diebetic his had a lot of problem they have had to clean it out so his had 2 ops hospital I am going to is only about 15miles a way and we should be fine afterwards thanks
carol It seems you are going through a bad patch right now. I think you have to think about your Op as your husband is getting all the care and attention he needs and it is now you who should be considered. You will have to stop tramadol before you go into hospital as they will treat you with morphine (which tramadol is) and you must not overdose. So best to stop it before you go in. Ask your doctor about this. Be careful with tramadol as it is habit forming. Ask your doctor about morphine patches. The hospital must be told you on tramadol before you go in. Do not panic as he is just as likely to be back home with you before you get called in for the OP. Do not be negative about it all, think positive and that it will all work out in the end. I wish you good luck with it all and don't worry. I live alone and also walk with stick and have a little dog. We get along fine and there's no sense in worrying or complaining. You will be well shortly and he will be back home. This is just momentary and will pass. Don't forget to smile!
Hi Carol, Poor you !! Sounds like me. I am going into the Nuffield, in woking on march 2nd !! I am on co-codamol, and the odd neurofen. But my dear hubby has been on the same meds as he too has OA in spine, hips & knees for many years. I am his carer. He is also severely sighted & deaf ! Poor chap. How about you go back to your GP?Good Luck. regards Amandah
Ditto to mayday's comments.....often we worry too much about what we can not control..... My surgery was on jan 27..... On the 24th, they started predicting a two day blizzard for our area, starting on the 27th! My mother was making the four hour trip to help me..... Needless to stay it was a bit stressful! BUT, my dad got on the phone, surgery was still a go and he found out we could rent a room across the street from the hospital for $25/ night.... We went in the night before and my mom stayed an extra night until the storm stopped and roads were cleared .... It all worked out .... Of course we have had 7 storms and 62" of snow since .... Alas, as frustrating as it is, we cannot stop the snow, .... Spring is on the calendar ....... Though we are all praying someone told Mother Nature!
