Smiley from Australia here.. Last week I said I was starting to feel good. Well that all changed at the weekend, my hip was really hurting so I was doing the ice packs to try and help with pain and swelling. I'm wk 4 tomorrow Wed and thought I would be better. When I left hospital I was given compression socks which go right up to the hip. I was told to wear them if I wanted to. Yesterday I decided to start wearing them and feel much better. I noticed swelling has gone down more. If anyone has them I suggest wearing them. I sleep in them and truly believe they are helping. I was lucky to be given 2 pairs, I wear them now day in day out and will keep wearing them till I see my surgeon on 17th Oct. After our big op swelling takes awhile to go down but I find these are really good.
I hope you are all doing great but remember it is a longer haul for some than others as we all heal differently.
I was told once I was walking around more that I did not need to wear my socks.... much to the relief of my husband as they prove so difficult to get on...
There is so many different methods of recovery dependant on Country, Surgeon, and even Physio's....
I've been ok no swelling to date. Day 11. I was told ted stockings for 6 weeks day and night. Easier to get on if you put a plastic bag over your toes. Once they are on then pull the bag through the hole. A pushover showed me in hosp.
I'm following the advice of the hosp as it seems different nurses give different advice going by this forum.
Sorry you are back in pain but it varies day to day. If you have watched the op it is quite brutal and lots of nerves and muscles need to repair.
Thereby is another question- any hints on putting them( compression socks on) the are a bit of the next hip op I dread- not only me but my husband too!
Last time they mad a significant difference once I got the right size.
Hello Smillee. It will be 4 weeks for me tomorrow too. I was given the compression socks but was told only to wear them doing the day . They help with blood clots . I have days where the hip feels better then days that it hurts really bad. Having a hard time sleeping if only I could get a good nights sleep. Ice helps and have to do the exercises and walk even with the pain. Have a good day and remember one day at a time.
I too am week 4 tomorrow Wed post op, from THR on left. I was very sore at the weekend after feeling really good, so have had a couple of days of taking it really easy, lots of rest with legs up on the bed, and it has really helped. I am not especially swollen but think our bodies are telling us to slow it down. Its quite hard on me at the weekend as I have a 6 yr old boy and hubbie is away, so think that is why, so am making the most of resting during school hours at the mo.
I have my surgeon apt on the 14th, so ver similar timings.
I wish you well and speedy recovery, glad you have found a useful solution. I think this is key, listen to our bodies and take it steadily.
I'm in US. 6-1/2 weeks post op. I was never given the compression socks. I still ice once in a while when I overdo. Just on over the counter meds now. I'm still stiff when I get up in the morning though.
I had to wear mine for 6 weeks, even when more active, luckily my surgeon hates them so only had them to the knee, other patients had the full leg ones. I was only allowed them off ofr an hour a day so that was usually when I was washing, then gave my legs an airing. You will get there. My leg ws so swollen after the op, it took me just over a week before I could lift it myself into bed I never realised how high my bed was till then)! I am a year on and loving life! keep smiling
We are very close with dates. I guess the hardest thing is I'm not allowed to do any excercises yet so I just do a 5 min walk up my street every couple of days. When I had my op my leg was the size of a tree trunk lol and that was due to them pulling all my muscles together. I love my surgeon he is so caring so I always follow his advice. It's just frustrating you think your going well then bam! You feel like your back to square one
Nice to know I'm not the only one having bad days. I've been giving myself clexane inj to stop blood clots and did the last one this morning Wed yay! Yes sleeping is a problem and I toss and turn all night it's frustrating. I think once I start Rehab 3 days a week in the hydro pool and gym it may help, but I can't start that till my 6wks is up and that's not till 19th Oct so not long to go
It's strange how we all get different instructions on leaving hospital after the operation. I was told I didn't need to wear compression socks once I got home although I did have to take blood thinning tablets for 5 weeks!
When I was in hospital for two nights I did sleep with some strange "boots" on my feet which constantly "blew up"--I was told this was to avoid blood clots forming so I wonderf if that's why I didn't have to wear the special socks once I left the hospital.
I had the 'puffing billy' boots as we called them, and then the TED stoclings for 6 weeks, than 4 weeks later had it all again following my revision on the same hip
