painful eyes

I had my eyes tested 10 months ago and the opthalmologist said I have a prescription but not strong enough for glasses. In November I started a new job with the civil service and it involves me being in front of the computer all day making calls. However the past week and a half I have left work everyday with a headache around my right temple and a painful feeling behind each eye. Also occasionAl blurred vision as if my eyes are refocusing.

Thoughts? Or just a hypochondriac?

Not at all. It is a strain using a computer all day and switching vision to and from the screen.

Company I used to work for arranged free eye tests for all staff using computers and helped with cost of glasses if needed. I would think that the Civil Service must have some arrangement like that for eye care. Probably comes under Heath and Safety nowadays:-)

Opticians will tell you that eye strain does cause headaches though my GP said that a recent article in the Lancet said otherwise.

Sitting in front of a screen all day, you tend not to blink, it is the same with driving or watching television.  Has anyone suggested trying an ocular lubricant?  They are also known as Artificial Tears and you can use them aas often as necessary.  It is best to have preservative free drops because the preservative is often alcohol, which is drying.

I know that Banks use a screen filter which is also supposed to help the eyes [as well as Privacy]

Do you have a Medical Officer at work, perhaps you should consult him/her?

Employers with employees using computers have a legal obligation to pay for eye examinations
