Painful muscles

I am 60 years old and have been on 150mcg of Thyroxine for the past year. For the past six months I have been woken up about 5am each day with a very painful left thigh muscle, it gradually goes away as I move around and is usually gone by mid morning. At about the same time my right collarbone became raised and painful. Has anyone ealse experienced this could it be related to my meds I have no other bad symptoms. Any help would be gratfully appreciated at the moment I am feeling like a moaning minnie.

Hypothyroidism can create a variety of muscle and joint-related symptoms. Most commonly, these symptoms are due to swelling of the muscles, or swelling that is pressing on nerves. Various problems seen include:

General muscular weakness and pain, including cramps, and stiffness

General joint pain, achiness, stiffness, known as \"arthropathy\"

Typically, the worst of these symptoms and conditions do usually resolve with proper treatment of the thyroid condition. When muscle and joint pain does not go away with proper thyroid treatment, however, it's time to ask several questions.

First, if you are hypothyroid, are you getting sufficient and proper treatment? Insufficient thyroid hormone replacement, or a need for the additional hormone T3, may be required to resolve muscle and joint pain.

Second, if you are receiving optimal thyroid treatment, and still suffering joint and muscle problems, should you get a referral to a rheumatologist, for further evaluation and possible treatment? A trained rheumatologist can provide a more thorough evaluation for arthritis and fibromyalgia. Rheumatologists are experts in joint and muscle problems, and treat arthritis, some autoimmune conditions, various musculoskeletal pain disorders, fibromyalgia and tendonitis.

Hi Guys

I too have had muscle problems over the last year. I was diagnosed with HT back in 2004 and am currently on 150mg Levothyroxine. A year ago I started having severe pains in my shoulders, groin and upper legs on both sides together with an increase in leg/foot cramps. I had been traingin for the 2008 marathon so was generally fit and healthy. The pains increased to such a state that it was very difficult to get out of bed or put on clothes (bending and moving about). All my thyroid function tests are apparently within normal ranges (including free T3/T4). I was referred to a rheumatologist who put me through numerous tests (blood, MRI and ultrasound) but cannot still diagnose what is wrong. Over the year I have had a couple of sterioid injections in order to improve my mobility which has helped but not cured. The latest is that they are going to put me on a small dose of steroid tablets. They have over time eliminated most rheumatic/muscular problems.

Currently my symptoms are stiff shoulders (rotor cuff area) and hamstrings/adductors. For example after sitting it is painful to get up as the hamstrings are always taut and it is difficult to get moving.

I have not yet seen an endocronologist so am arranging to see one as I personally feel that this problem stems from being hypoT.

Hi

can you let me know your outcome ? I have very similar symptoms to you. Adductors, lower back, hips, shoulders and knees stiff and painful. Seeing Endo today
