Pains after 5 hours sleep

As you know from my posts I have been unable to sleep due to Restless Legs. Yesterday my GP prescribed Ropinirole 0.2mg and hallelujah I slept from 10.30 until 3.30. At 3.30 pain woke me up, pain that seemed to be everywhere especially in buttocks, both  hips, thighs and all down both legs. I had to get up and stay up, the pain and stiffness was so bad it took a good few lumbar stretches before I could even put one foot in front of the other. Is this pain to be expected at 3 weeks post op? I went to bed with no pain AND took co-codamol before I went to sleep. Thanks for any reply on pain levels.after sleep.

I was off all painkillers just over a week after my (posterior) THR operation.

I did seem to have a bit of luck as I was weight bearing the day after surgery, even though the parts were put in badly.

I came off the painkillers slowly, reducing the number of pills per day starting at 7 days post-op.  I stopped Tramadol first, then the Diclofenac, and kept monitoring my pain levels which were down at 1 or 2 on a scale of 0 to 10.

I do hope you find some solution that works for you soon.

Graham

I know what you mean about the sleep problems and the restless leg sendrom, I’m  miserable and exhausted,, if you read my story,,I am sitting hear a week post op, with a antibiotic spacer after 3 surgeries on same hip, 2 difference incisions and a pic line to give myself IV antibiotics every 8 hours,,, 2 years ago I had a successful story, my left hip surgery went as planned, I had a painful but short time recovery,, if you are feeling more pain than you think you should,, keep an eye out for infection, redness ,swelling, and drainage and flew like semtoms,, do not hesitate to get back in to see doctor if that happens,if you call and they don’t listen to you or make you wait 2 -3 days for an appointment,, DON’T LISTEN to them, go to ER at the hospital you had surgery at,, cause you don’t want that infection to get in your blood stream!!

My home health nurse came to see me after me calling her and describing my semtoms the on call doctor told me to wait till my appointment in 3 days,,My home health nurse was upset at this and told me No you call that office and get in right away, thankfully I did and they saw me the next day, and that same day I found out I had staph infection and was sent straight to hospital for my first revision surgery, that didn’t work,, so now I’m on the 2 step revision surgery,, it sucks but I’m glad they haven’t wasted any time to do something about it before the infection went septic,, so please be aware of your body and what it’s telling you,, hope all gets better for you.

Hi Sarah, I was on morphine for the pain. My hips did not hurt but it was every muscle in my torso, legs and feet.. I also have arthritis in all my joints so laying flat on a bed for 2 weeks did havoc. I have to stretch every day and the days I don't go to the gym I hurt more. Once my joints get lubed and moving the pain gets better. You are now sleeping which is great for your recovery and to give you the energy to get better. My arthritis does on occasion wake me up every 2 hrs. I am the weather person at home. My joints start hurting 4 hrs before the snow, rain comes. I live with rub 535, hot showers and stretched and warm Merino under layers. I crack about 100 times before I can get going every morning and I make a point of not giving up since there are so many beautiful people to meet and projects to do and my job is very satisfying: helping others. I am now on just anti inflammatory for my arthritis, a solid regimen of exercises and stretches, every day rain, snow, sunshine I am at the gym by 7 am and pool afterwards for rehab and social gathering. After all it is my hippies and knees rehab group and we laugh share experience s and support each other. Rest, get your energy, manage the pain and move forward. It will get better.

Hi Claudia, that’s good news to read you are able to meet up and socialise with your hippy friends. Are you in UK? I don’t know anyone here who has been through a recent hip replacement. I wish I did. It would be so nice to get together for a chat sometimes. You are very lucky!

Thank you Joyce and I am so sorry to read you have been through so much but I’m relieved you were able to get the right sort of help. It sounds horrendous. My biggest problem has been almost total lack of sleep but fingers crossed that the new drug that worked for me last night will continue to do so!

Yes Graham I’ve also cut down on the number of co - codamols I take. I have 2 before I go to bed at about 10pm  and usually 2 when I wake up about 4.30 am. And that’s it. I think that’s quite good actually but it’s the pain I wake up in that’s perturbing me. It seems like every muscle in my body hurts. There is no way I could stay in bed any longer. So I get up, have a cup of tea and toast and take my 2 co codamols. That seems to see me through until bedtime but today I’ve done a bit more walking indoors than usual and not only am I shattered I’m also in a lot more pain than I would normally be in if I hadn’t done so much walking about. But I guess you have to build up like that and one day the pain will just lessen.  Here’s hoping anyway!

The biggest problem with this surgery is the rate at which we recover.

It is so much slower than we hope for or expect.

At the time, the pains seem to come from everywhere and to go on forever, and sleeping is so difficult too.

To add insult to injury, the surgeons consider this such a wonderfully easy operation.  For them it is easy, as it usually lasts about an hour, but for us poor souls on the receiving end we have to endure so much pain in a long recovery.

Best wishes to you, you will one day be pain free and waling normally again.

Graham

I was on opioid pain medication until 5 weeks post op, and weaned off easily in that fifth week. I took them round the clock. Didn't have much pain. And I only slept, at the most 1 ½ hours at a stretch for the first 8 weeks. I think when you are sleeping and not moving much, coupled with not much pain medication, there can be a result like you had last night. 3 weeks is still very early, and there is lots of healing going on inside of your leg, in bone, muscle, connective tissue, skin - all over!

Hi Graham,

Pain free and walking normally, now that sounds fantastic to me, 😀 I'm still waiting to see the specialist and hope it's soon, it's got to get better in 2018, all the best to all you fine hippies, stay safe 😊

Oh good,, I’m glad you found some medicine that works for sleep,, for me, I am so great full to get any sleep but then I wake up  a little while latter in horrible pain from being still that long, and yes for me too walking around makes pain worse ,, I use ice pack sometimes after walking to make it numb and count the hours to see if it is time for more pain meds,, I had to up my meds to something stronger,, from hydrocodone  to percacet  from leaving the hospital,, this being my 3rd surgery I feel as though my hip and leg  is hurting 3 times as bad,, I’m not even worried about taking my meds as directed, I will know when it’s time to wein off,, when the pain isn’t so bad,, i don’t like having to take medication, so I know I will have no trouble getting off the pain meds, my biggest worry with taking the meds is getting constipated,, but I take mirlax ,, I hope you feel better soon,,going through this to me is torture! But am waiting and hoping,, it gets better

In Guelph, Ontario Canada, we have physiotherapy for hips and knees at the community therapy pool. I started going there as soon as my staples came out and exercising in the warm water does wonders. Do you have a community pool near by?
