Pediatric LS

Hi, I'm new to the group. My 9 year old has

Had LS since at least 18 months. She hasn't had a flare up in 6 years and has been home from school for a week. Does anyone have experience/info with ped LS? She is constantly itchy & uncomfortable. Also, I diagnosed her through my gynecologist and dermatologist on staff, but is there a specialist I should be seeing? We are close to Chicago. Many thanks!

Hi there,

So sorry to hear about your daughter. I am in a couple of lichen sclerosis support groups on Facebook.

They are closed groups and so no one can see what you post or comment if they are not in the group.

I'm sure you will find great support here, but I have seen mothers asking for advice for their children in there, so I'm just mentioning it as another route to support.

Really hoping she gets over her flare up soon xxx

I hear you. Thank you for the advice🌈

I have not really experience with LS at such a young age, though I suspect that my discomfort at a young age was caused by LS.  At the time no one thought to take a serious look at my complaints.

What may help is baking soda baths (1/3 cup) and/or borax baths (1/6 cup in a bath) Plus rinses after every bathroom visit.  (three pinches in a Perin bottle)

Also, perhaps apply a small amount of coconut oil after the rinses.

Has you health provider prescribed treatment such as steroids? I don't know if recommended medication is the same as adults. I know the symptoms must be under control to prevent further and more complex problems.

Good luck!

Hi Gretchen,

Its great you were able to get a diagnosis quickly.  I spent years in misery  before getting one which was the norm over 20 years ago.  Many recommend vulva specialists. Have you also tried  altering your child's diet?  There are studies linking gluten to autoimmune diseases and LS is thought to have a connection to autoimmune.  I get flares when I eat chocolate and too much sugar.  When we irritate the gastrointestinal system so many additional organs and tissues are irritated not to mention it is also acidifying (sugar) so the body must respond by balancing that acid typically with the calcium from teeth and bone. Try removing gluten, candy, sugary snacks, etc for a month and see if it helps.  It cant hurt.  Just my own thoughts.  Wish both of you the best
