Periods

I have had annorexia for 3 years now and lost my periods 2 years ago. Will i ever regain my periods or be able to have chidlren? I have stopped losing weight and am maintaing.

Hi Kirsty - that's really positive that you have started maintaining your weight.

The answer to your question is very variable, and not one I can answer. Some people can restart their periods when they are below what is a healthy weight, and others restart their periods when they are in the mid point of the target bracket, and others never restart.

There are also other implications for long term starvation and it would be worth having a bone scan to see what your risks are of osteoporosis.

As another practical suggestion, it would be advisable generally to have a plan in place to try and gain the lost weight over time, but especially if you plan is to have children.

You will maybe want to do this with support of a health professional as it can be tricky alone.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your reply. I already have ostoephrosis (cant spell it lol) so am having another check next month. If i never regain my periods will i be able to have chidlren?

Hi Kirsty - I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

If you never regain your periods then you will not be able to have children, via natural birth, as the period is the cycle in which the womb prepares itself for pregnancy. If the egg isn't fertilised then the lining of the womb breaks down, which is what causes the bleeding.

If children is something you would like in the future, there are other options via non natural methods, such as surragacy (like Phoebe in Friends) adoption (Erica in Friends) and IVF.

Without periods you cannot have a baby naturally.

Ok thank you
