A short while ago I mentioned I seemed to be developing a Hernia in the left groin area and wondered if it was pred related. since I have so many other conditions in addition to PMR.Athe time I was trying to reduce (as it turned out too quickly) and had got to 4/5 mg..Also I was feeling 'out of sorts' and depressed. After reading many posts on here 10mg didnt seem so bad after all.I upped the dose to 10mg,Result is that the swelling in the groin has all but gone. Was it really a hernia or was the flare targetting that area of my lower interstine. My depression has also become quite manageable.
This PMR thing is really sometimes a bit of a mystery.
Hi Bob, glad you got sorted with the Hernie and yes PMR is something of a mystery of which I am only at the beginning of, but so glad you are no longer suffering discomfort. I am very new to it and have my first hospital appointment on Thursday. All the very best.

Hi Bob,
Glad you are feeling better! One of my earliest symptoms of PMR was tightness in one groin. It totally evolved from there: both groins, shoulders, neck, wrists, yuck pain, etc. I started 20 mgs Prednisone early December 2013 and am now down to 7.5. Have been reducing super slow and so far so good.
Hello Bob, I'm sorry I am not medically trained so I cannot offer you any ideas as to the appearance and sudden disappearance of the 'phantom' hernia. But I do agree that since I've been diagnosed with PMR I have the oddest pains that appear in the oddest of places that remain for a day, a week, a month, take your pick! Sometimes they coincide with decrease of dosage of preds sometimes not. All I will say is I developed a pain around my breast bone on the left hand side, the pain came and went on its own accord, finally I went to the Dr, she gave me a through examination, blood tests, which have all come back fine and I'm still awaiting an ultra sound scan, I've temporarily had my omeprazole upped and the pain has practically gone, although I'm still going to my ultra sound. So what I'm saying is, if at any time a pain or lump does appear, disappear, appear again, you know the scenario! Please. Pop into your Dr. If they're half decent, they'll give you a proper examination and for something like lumps they can tell just by feeling it if it's attached, solid, fluid and therefore take appropriate action. Bob if this lump does appear again, I were you, just to ease my mind I'd pop along to the Dr. Also you mention depression? When any of us have unanswered medical problems we become insecure and anxious therefore popping along to the drs we reduce the depression. When the pain appeared just under my breast bone, I thought, oh no has my heart been damaged, and worried about all sorts!? My mind has been put at rest and I'm back to my normal cheery self. All the best, christina
Hi Bob
Pain in the groin area was one of my first symptoms of what eventually turned out to be PMR, leading me to believe that I had a hip problem, so your swelling in that area could certainly be PMR-related, which seems to have been proven by the improvement after upping the steroids to 10mg. Good to hear you feel better all round and long may that continue.
Trochanteric bursitis can cause pain in the groin - whether it causes swelling as well I'm not sure, it is inflammation so it could well do.
Depressive mood is part of many autoimmune disorders and is one of the criteria for PMR. If you were having a flare then it could well have caused some of the problem.
DID you get your GP to check out the "hernia"? Not that the average GP is much use at them judging by my husband's experiences...
Thanks everyone once again.Interesting that several here have experienced 'groin' disscomfort. Ok,I'll say it could be PMR related then.
Poor old PRED.It gets
blamed for almost everything LOL
Keep on taking the tablets!
I like your final sentence " This PMR thing is really sometimes a mystery". It certainly has many manifestations.
All inflammatory processes have varying degrees of swelling. A puffy groin could certainly be a manifestation of a trochanteric bursitis as Eileen mentioned.
Mine started in my right hip, not much if any swelling, but it interfered with my gait.

Sorry to hear about your recent "extra" problems. You seem to be getting there, however.
Where are you now, Bob (I presume that is your name!). Have you finished your travels now?
All the best for 2015. Constance
I first developed PMR symptoms in January 2014, miraculously they disappeared after 4 weeks of sometimes, excruciating pain, mainly in my back and waist area. In April the symptoms returned with force and I developed a swelling in my right side upper waist area. When I was eventually diagnosed with pmr and mentioned the swelling, the docs (2 GPs and a Consultant had no answer for it and more or less poo pood it) although I was sent for a CT scan which proved negative. I too thought it must be a hernia. It developed before taking any prednisolone and didn't really hurt.
Once I started on the steroids, tho' I developed 'pads of fat' around my waist anyway and the "hernia' just blends in!, joy.
