Physio 9 weeks post op

Hi fellow hippies .

had an appt with hospital physio today v

he said that the limp and pain I am getting is normal because my adductors and abductors are very weak .

he said  I am doing well , didn't give me any new exercises until I can do the one where you lay on good side and lift bad leg up .

I have to work on that and go back in two weeks .

he said to work thro the pain unless it is unbearable .

I am pleaded about that as I know where I am now and relieved that everything is ok .

onwards and upwArds now .

Hi Mary

Sounds good...not in my exercise book from the hospital so will happily add it.

I'm presently working on standing alone balancing on operated legfor 30 seconds with other leg bent at knee parallel to floor...supposedly strengthening.

Good luck with the next visit

Thanks , I haven't been doing that exercise so will try it . Wish hospitals would give same treatment and exercises .

Glad to hear the Physio says you are doing well and everything is normal.  It makes you feel good too.

Hi fellow hippies,

was anyone given a dvd to watch explaining the procedure and exercises and showing how the exercises should be done?

I was given one by my Consultant at my initial consultation on Monday, and have to return it 6 weeks post op

Thanks Barbara and good luck to you x

Wish I had been given one .

Hi Mic,

At what stage are you post op to carry out this exercise ?

cheers

Hi Mary, have you tried doing that while stood up? It's a bit easier than the led down one.

Hi Carole, I got one. It was okay I guess but the booklet was reasonably detailed anyway.

Jennifer, uk

Yes Jennifer I can do that but physio said I need to do other one before he gives me more progressive exercises .

Thanks

Hi Kev,hippies,

The standing up on the operated leg exercise is one they encourage for 6 weeks post op, but it's similar to a tia chi exercise I know so found it easy. Want to try the recommended lying down version raising the op leg on this page tonight.

Mic

Lying down version is really hard . Physio said to keep trying it even if you only lift leg a little .

Good luck

Dear All

I am 9 weeks post op and reading all your posts it amazes me how different we all are  not only the procedures we have but also the post op care we receive including Physio support. I had advice before the op from Physio, advice and support from them whilst I was in hospital and then one to one sessions with a Physio for about 6 weeks after the op. Everthing was going well until the last session when the Physio wanted me to do one legged squats which I found really painful and decided not to do in the end.  However some exercises can be painful initially and then with practice can get easier to do with little or no pain.  Initially I found walking upstairs in the normal way without a crutch and stepping up with my operated leg was quite painful but following advice from my Physio and this forum I did exercises each day and now I can go upstairs without pain. In other words as usual it is best to listen to your body when you have pain but to push it a small amount each day so you can gently build up strength. Yesterday I went to a music gig in London. I thought I had covered all the bases but didn't realise I would need to queue for at least 45 minutes to get in, go up and down lots of steps to get to my seat some without any support, then stand during the gig so I could seen (!) but I managed it all with the help of my wonderful living crutch, my husband! The gig by the way was great and so pleased I pushed myself to go even though was a bit tired (knackered!) today. 😄.  The point of all this is that you need to take things carefully but do try to push yourself a little and try new things with the support of your crutch(es) or partner if needed so that you gain confidence until one day you can do it all!

Best wishes to all

Hi Mic

Cheers for info and good luck to you Kung fu hippie. Will look at that technique a little later in my recovery.

Best wishes and regards

Hi mic I am 8weeks pos op and tried the exercise standing on operated leg for 30seconds with un operated leg bent at the knee but couldn't keep my balance for long how do you do it?

Cheers Mic

my consultant made me do that today, and because i could he said my muscles were healing well so i guess the easier it becomes the more healed the muscles are!

Hi Jennifer,

I wasn't given a booklet, only the dvd. Should I ask for one. The Consultant merely said that I must now wait for an admission date but to start the exercises. Is the book let more comprehensive?

Thanks

Hi Carole, no you don't need both they are the same exercise set. I guess they thought I needed extra help 😉
