Physio

Been discharged front physio today I was given new set of exercises and shown how to get up and down off the floor always useful lol , and some bands to go round my legs to make clams more difficult feeling positive

Hi Susan, I just came back from my last physio. I will miss James and Anne my physio's. They really boost my confidence.

Can I ask what clams are? A, I just being thick.

Thank you x

At day 10 and could not imagine the day you described - thank you.

I just achieved 40 degrees on abductors and felt a small victory as these have been my nemesis and I still cannot do outgoing w/o a tiny assist to overcome gravity. Getting on and off the floor - seems more than a little distant but another 'hill to climb' and all that πŸ˜‚

Laid on side op hip on top ankles together and opening leg oo er got the giggles don't quite know how to describe it try imagine a shell opening I think that's hos it got its name

You will get there day by day a little bit stronger x

Hi I was just told by my PT that I am doing the clam wrong.  I had been doing my own self directed physio from watching youtube videos etc as got none from the hospital, but went to a private PT today.  Apparently I have been using my back muscles and not the gluteus medius to do this excercise... hence sore back doh!  Still only week 4 and I think I am otherwise doing very well.

Yes it can be difficult my physio told me not to lean back and to keep my hip facing straight upwards so as not to be using the back muscles

Lol. I know what you mean. Never gave it a name. I shall now call it the clam.

Im 9 weeks post op. I just want to put my own sock on and do my trainers up.

X

Me too when u been told you can fully bend

I'm intrigued ... How are we supposed to get into and back up off the floor. I asked my physio last week but he could not tell me

It all seemed a but complicated and something I won't be trying again in a hurry :πŸ˜€

How many weeks are you post op? and when did you start clam exercise?

I am 4 weeks tomorrow. Do you recommend looking at youtube videos for more exercises?

Karen xx

I was 6 weeks when given clam exercise, also stepping up and down with op leg on botom stair , I know this varies from place to place but I'm glad I didn't do too much till the 6 week mark I am now 8 weeks

Oh good i was thinking maybe 6 weeks but thought maybe they started you sooner.

I dont want to do to much either so 2 more weeks :-)

Thanks Susan

I was told pre op to be patient the first 6 weeks and take care of myself eat healthy plenty rest short walks and basic exercises the foot paddling, clenching and knee raises and tbh I'm glad I didn't do more I now feel physically well enough to add extra things, every week I have felt a bit stronger, no raised toilet seat now πŸ˜€and very little use of a crutch good luck along ur journey x

Thank you for thst Susan i love this forum πŸ‘

I am doing exactly that and will be patient and wait the 6 weeks.

hi  can i ask how many weeks post op you are?

I was given bed exercises to do at home. before my discharge from hospital 5 days after operation to right hip.Was only offered one physio session in hospital on day 2.

Im due to go and see consultant on the 11/4/16 and will be 8 weeks post op.Was the physio offered to you or did you request it?

I am just 8 weeks and the physio was set up for me to see them 6 weeks which was one day after my appt with the consultant I have had 2 sessions and the option of booking in if i need it this option lasts a month before they discharge me..i believe I have benefited from seeing them because we are all individuals and they can assess and advice what's best for you, I would try arrange it if possible.

Hi Susan, how exciting to be discharged from the Physio. It's so interesting to read the different Physio experiences. Getting up and down off the floor I'm so looking forward to that 😊. I had my first Physio session 3 weeks post op last Monday. She was really harsh said I still walked little old ladyish and I should be walking around the house without a stick. I've limped for 17 months and two weeks pre op I could barely walk. My consultant said my old hip was a nasty mangled mess surrounded by nasty fluid. I think that's unrealistic I'm doing all the exercises she has shown me but last night I went to bed in agony and tears. I'm back on my stick again today. I wondered how many others have had such an experience. I know I'm classed as young to have a hip replacement as I'm early 50's but I feel totally deflated that I'm not recovering quicker.

Oh no please don't feel defeated I was very similar to u I'm 58 and used one crutch around the house at 3 weeks it all came together for me around the 6 week mark, I still have a limp but practising walking the tightrope and balancing exercise is helping, I get very tired still and have to take regular rests listen to ur body it will help u along the way.
