good afternoon hippies and hippies to be!
can anyone share their experiences with regards to physio?
do all UK nhs trusts have this aftercare as standard or does it vary from trust to trust?
im due to have my replacement on Tuesday (don't know whether to build my hopes up as last time they got dashed!) At Cannock hospital in Staffordshire.
thank you all

Hello Lin
Good luck with op. My hospital give Physio twice daily while in hospital and then expected to carry on at home with the appropriate exercises ticked in the book. At my follow up surgeon checked the movement of the hip and could tell I had been doing them and no need for further instructions. Told me to increase my walking preferably outside rather the gym as uneven terrain improves balance. Now 14 weeks post op and very stable
Hope this helps but everyone needs different things depending on state of play before op
Varies I think. I had pre op hip school taken mainly by physio. She covered all the do's and don'ts, showed us some of the exercises and advised we did them before the op if possible. In hospital up next day on frame, crutches the day after. At least one short but intense one to one sessions including how to get up and down stairs etc. excercises sheet given at present hip school and again on leaving hospital. No follow up unless you are deemed to need it, just follow excercises sheet and do those specified for the length of time post op. There is an NHS based app, pocket physio, which the physics I saw said was good and worth using
Hi. I had 6 sessions of Physio after discharge from hospital. Seemed to be automatically provided. Physio also checked scar and gave lots of good advice. This was in Gloucestershire.
Think it does go by LAs
Good luck with it all

Hi Linzh
I have read on the forum that some get it and some don't. I know my surgeon books you for it after 6 weeks. But as I had so many problems and I am still having them it is now week nine coming up to week ten and I had to ask to have hydro threrapy. So fingers crossed that will start next week. Then in three weeks time I have my right hip done wait till it all heals and start again. Hopefully second time won't be as bad. I hope you do not get cancled again. I havr had that happen to me a few times. You build yourself up to have it done and you get so disapointed and angry. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. One bit of advice I will give you is to phone your surgeons secretary and ask her to make sure you are not cancled this time. I did that because I had had enough of getting there and bein g told to go home.
I was cancelled whilst in theatre! I don't think I could ring the secretary I'll be too scared lol!

I phone my surgeons secretary all the time if I need advice or there is something wrong. I was told if there is something wrong to ;let her know to pass a message on to my suregeon and not go to my GP. So I have been doing that. You will find her quite helpful to be honest and that is what they are there for.
Hi Linzh!
Greetings -
Just to confuse - we are are having an operation costed at £10,000.
Like ann I got zero physio in exeter, other than how to manage stairs in hospital during 4 days post op.
Lucky folk who get automatic six sessions of physio, cos while most of us do the exercises, we often (me often) does them slightly wrong, and someone expert to point this out makes the op more cost effective....
Anyway at 3.5 months I'm doing fine in op leg, but my shoulder and opposite knee ache a little, so my GP has booked me in for a one off physio slot to look at overall posture.
We shall see wot he says....
Bye

I was given some exercises to do in hospital after the op which I have been doing ever since. I've not had any other physio. If I feel i could do with some I will see my doc. This is what happened when I had my last hip op years ago and I ended up needing some physio on the knee after the hip op! At the moment everything is going ok though and it is still early days.
I've also had phsyio before my op - again I went to my doc and asked for it to help strengthen the muscles.
I am in Exeter as well, had physio in hospital, do steps etc, a leaflet wtth excercises to do at home, plus one physio visit here at three weeks, and one due tomorrow at six weeks post op
My Dr doesn't believe in physio he is of old school, walking is the best but I might get some when I go for my follow up Apple poo t, also going to push to get my lathe done as that has been playing up also I am still using both crutches when I go out I wonder if I am taking a while to get up to speed
Hi Linzi
No it would seem that aftercare is very regional. I saw the physio every day I was in hospital, I was given a booklet with exercises to do as soon as I arrived back on the ward, others to do in bed as soon as the physio had been to make sure I was doing them properly and a final set to do once I was upright. THE END. No follow up, no offer of help, nothing.
That said I have been doing my own thing and feel I'm progressing well.
Hi Linzi
I had my op in Rugby and had to attend a compulsory pre-op hip education class as a condition of being put on the waiting list. This was run by the physio team and I was sent an a5 booklet of information/exercises beforehand. After the op, I had three physio visits during my 4 day stay, to make sure I could stand ok, dress myself, climb stairs etc. When I got home I had a phonecall on day 5 to fix an out-patient physio appt. I've had two of those at two-weekly intervals, with the same physio. I've got my third next week at the 6 week stage. Don't honestly know how long they go on for . At the two week stage I was cleared to use just one crutch and given some additional exercises to do. At the four week stage I was cleared to drive and to start swimming again (no breaststroke, though). My consultant saw me just before 4 weeks post-op and I will next be seen in three months' time.
I think it is fair to say that it varies a lot, depending on where you are in the country!
all the best
Cheryl
Like you Cheryl I had to attend a preoperative assessment and got the booklet but wasn't given instructions about pre op physio I did get the visits afterwards but follow up physio as my surgeon is of old school believes walking is the best physio I am at nearly week 6 and still walking with crutches haven't done stairs yet as I live in a bungalow xx
Hi Linzi ,
I had both my operations in London (Guys). I asked the physio who saw main hospital after my operation to refer me for further physio. I then got an appointment through and asked that physio to refer me to hydrotherapy. If you don't ask you're most likely not to get!
I think your opps on the 29th June? Best of luck 🍀 it goes ahead as planned :-)
