Pimples since diagnosed with hypothyroidism

Since diagnosed with an under active thyroid (April 2013) my skin has got worse. It is no longer smooth and clear as it used to be, I happen to break out more and my skin tone isn't as bright and radiant as previously.. I'm only 23!  I've always had smooth and clear skin until last year which made me go to the doctors amongst other symptoms I was experiencing.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced these issues since having hypothyroidism? My thyroid level is currently at 1.6 and I'm on 75 mg of levothyroxine.

Dear Krishna

I am 40 and have started getting spots since I got my symptoms.  I have never suffered from having many spots, not even as a teenager.  My nails are also in a horrible state and they ahve always been good.  The medication hasn't sorted either of these things out, but I am learning to live with it.  Let me know if you find anything that helps.  I will let you know if I find anything too.

I was prescribed 50mcg thyroxine in April 2014. I am 26 years old and have never had an issue with pimples on my back and chest. But lately I have been breaking out with what looks like a massive rash but its tiny little pimples!!!

I hadn't considered a connection with the meds until I read this post but the timing is about right for it to be caused by this.

Please keep us posted if you find any helpful info. Good luck!!  smile

Overactivity and underactivity of thyroid gland may result in alterations in skin, hair and/or nails. This may be as a result of the abnormal levels of thyroid hormone. Overall, the most common problem associated with thyroid disease is dry skin associated with hypothyroidism. This is the worse in winter with low humidity and is aggravated as we get older. You should continue with your treatment for hypothyroidism in consultation with doctor. Certain medications, supplements and even some foods may affect your ability to absorb levothyroxine, please talk to your doctor. And also take care of your skin at home to avoid the situation to become worse such as avoid harsh irritating soaps and lotions. Use a cleansing bar, just where one is dirty – hands, groin, axilla. Have a soak in the tub daily (not too hot).
