This might sound like a stupid question but I will ask anyway! I am going on holiday in January. I had MIS bunion surgery and have screws as a result of that and one as a result of a hammertoe correction. Does anyone know if I need to have any documentation for going through security at the airport? I know that I am sounding a bit stupid but I realise that I don't actually know what the screws are made out of
Hi Karen don't think it should be a problem my daughter has 2 metal rods all way down her spine and 17 screws and she's never had any bother so I would have thought it would be the same but I'm the same as you I've just had screws put in my foot after bunion surgery and I've no idea what there made of I would think there titanium .
Hi Karen - I agree with Mitchy. I don't believe it will be an issue. How are you getting on with your recovery? I am 12 days post op from MICA.
Hi Karen screws usually made of titanium. Have just flown back from Manchester and no problems with my screws. Enjoy your holiday!
Yes you should be fine - i totally agree with previous information provided. I also hope you recovery is smooth and make sure to keep that foot lifted.
A really big Thank you to all of you for your replies. Feeling a bit stupid that I didn't know what they are made of! Just shows that there are a lot of questions that you should ask and that you should never be afraid to ask!
Sandispoon, I am 10 weeks post surgery and am doing fine. I
i have had aches and a few pains but no real pain. An awful lot better than I anticipatedHopefully this will be the same for you.
Each week seems to have brought significant improvement. You will notice that you are able to do more and to get around much more easily. I struggled to walk any significan distance whilst wearing the post op shoes, particularly because it hurt my back. However, did go out and about for coffee etc which definitely made me feel better.
The 6 week visit to the consultant was a big turning point for me.. I was really terrified of standing without the support of the shoes and had it in my mind that it would really hurt. When the consultant said that I should be trying to walk up to a mile I day I really didn't think that I would be able to do it ! However, nothing could be further from the truth! No pain when standing and walkmg a darn sight easier than with the post op shoes! Have managed increasingly well. Have been walking more easily this week and having less problems with my back. Have walked nearly 2 miles with no real issues apart from being a bit achey.
Feet are still swollen. The only thing that I could get on for the first 2weeks out of post op shoes was walking sandals with adjustable tops. Quite a lot of this was to do with the swelling but also because the big toes were very stiff and would not bend at all. Felt a bit stupid going out with these on and socks! However, this has improved quite a bit over the last week. Particularly noticed this cos have to tie laces a bit tighter. Shoe choice is still very limited - walking shoes and a pair of EEE fit boots that I bought last week for 'going out'. Would have preferred shoes but needed to be practical.
One foot aches a bit more than the other but both are improving. physio has been very helpful. Toes are becoming much more flexible and the big toes are starting to not be so raised. I had taken photos just before having it done and took some knew photos yesterday. Put them side by side and found this to be very helpful as recognised how much better they looked. Will do this again in a couple of weeks And hope to see further improvement. I think that it is true what other people on the forum have said when they have said that things look better over time.
Hope that this has been of some help. You will have some down days but try to keep positive and look back at what you could do a week before and I am sure that you will keep seeing loads of progress. Someone else said a few days ago, keep expectations reasonable. Things might not be perfect but think how much better than they had been before!
Good luck and Merry Christmas!
Thank you.
Currently sitting with feet up. My husband says that this unusual! But been on my feet a bit today and a bit achey so making thermoset if a bit of 'down time'. Good luck to you too
