Playing hockey - felt knee "pop"

Hey all,

I was diagnosed about 3-4 weeks ago with what was possibly a bakers cyst in my left knee. The pain disapated but Saturday evening I was playing hockey, I was standing in front and I went to turn to go after a puck, and my skate was caught in a rut. As I turned a felt a pop in the left knee and searing pain through my knee. I tried to push off to skate and was met with pain in every stride. I hobbled back to the bench. The pain Saturday night and Sunday was non stop and about a 6 on a scale from 1-10. I can't straighten it completely or bend it past 90 degrees without pain. A majority of the pain is in the back and along the sides of the knee. There isn't much swelling. But the stability is compromised a bit if I try to turn on it when I walk. The pain isn't too bad today, but still hurts bad when I go from sitting to standing.

I'm really hoping it was the cyst rupturing and I didn't tear anything in it.

Anyone else ever have this happen?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tommyboy. Yes I did have this happen to me. I got up out of a chair and twisted to pick something up and pop! and the pain was horrendous. Mind you I couldn't walk at all without assistance. My hubby took me to A&E and I had damaged the miniscus. 3 months later I had a TKR as it wouldn't heal and the bones were very arthritic. I also had to have a new patella. I hope that is not the case. They can operate on a miniscus tear, but wasn't worth it for me as there was so much arthritis. You really need to get it looked at. At least you need physio to help you. They will show you some exercises and strap it. However if it is torn you need to see the doc. Good luck.

I was able to get a hold of my primary doctor who told me I should schedule an appointment with an ortho doctor as soon as possible. I was able to get an appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Really hoping it was just the cyst popping.

Fingers crossed. Let us know how it goes.
