Please help I still have severe pain after lumber spinal fusion 9 months ago:(

Hi I am wondering if anyone can help me? I have an anterior into body lumbar fusion L4/5 eight months ago and I still have a pulling pain in my stomach/pelvis back where I was operated on when I move or walk? I also have severe pain when I sit for more than half an hour when I go to get up I can't walk feels like I need oiling is the only way to describe it? Then after five mins or so off standing or walking Alittle it eases. Has anyone experienced this after this surgery. It's getting me down as doctors just keep saying it's healing well and op went well by can't seem to help anymore thank you

Hi Joanne,

I am 4 months post ALIF (Double L4-S1) and feel the exact same. Surgeon said it's healing well. Although I have bad nerve pain into the bargain. Hoping a lignocaine Infusion I have scheduled for the 31st Aug will help a little with the pain.

Physio is the only way forward, my fusion was 32 years ago, and the pulling pain round my side never went away, but I had traction for 7 days and that's when it started.

i know things are much improved nowadays, but spent years having steroid injections, spinal blocks, implanted SCS, tens, and God knows what. The only thing that helped at all was living with the pain and learning to be more active, not a lot more active, I can't walk far, but could swim, and physio balance classes to get my body more in line helped a lot.

It's a slow recovery but if you can get your muscles a bit stronger, it does help.

Hi Joanne...I had spinal fusion L4L5 over a year ago & just like you at the 9 month mark I was wondering if it was worth going through the surgery b/c I was still in pain & could not walk without some pain.  I'm hoping for your sake that you will also someday soon feel so much better.  I can now walk all day without pain.  I can sometimes still feel a bit of strain at the surgical site but I'm hoping that even that will go away with time....

All I can say is be patient ...stay positive things will improve...

Many thanks Scott for your message, how old are you and where did u have your op? I live london had it in wan more. What is lignocaine fusion? I will look it up

Hi Joanne,

I had my op in Glasgow. The New Queen Elizabeth Uni Hospital. I'm 44. This is my 3rd op on same area. The infusion is a overall pain relief drug. Hopefully to help my nerve pain.

I'm going to try and get back in Spire Back and Neck clinic. Think my Physio is doing more harm than good. Got me doing crunches at 14 weeks post op plus other stuff.

Thanks again scott I am 35 do u have support around you? I found physio made me worse too. Let me know how the infusion pain goes?

Yeah, I'm married with kids and also have my parents close by. Starting back at work a week tomorrow. Not going to be fun.

Thanks so much. Feel like am going mad the pain is horrible I can't stand up straight some days only relief is laying down did you get this? Many thanks X

hi Scott how did the 31st go? I feel a stiff/need oiling lol pain and can't stand up some days straight pain is intensive do u get this? ,any thanks maybe I need the infusion injection? Or maybe another op would take pain?

How did you did you find out you had nerve pain? How can they tell? X
