Could anyone help me?
My 5yr old daughter is experiencing pins and needles in both hands, with muscle weakness (she has no strength in her hands when this happens). She says her arms feel heavy.
It’s breaking my heart and we were sent away from the emergency room today.
Thank you for any help or advice you may have.
This is likely not MS but a nerve issue with her wrists/arms or neck. Go to her physician and he will refer and check this out.

I have only ever experienced symptoms in one side of my body. The reason I was eventually diagnosed was because of one sided weakness and I was unable to walk. I have never experienced any pins and needles sensations.
This is just my experience but I was sent away several times and actually told that I was a liar. Don’t give up hope
Thank you for you’re reply. Because both arms and hands are involved, I wonder if she has a neck issue. I’m taking her back in tomorrow as she was unable to even hold her toothbrush tonight.
Thank you for your reply. I’m sorry for your difficulty in getting a diagnosis. It’s so hard to be taken seriously. They look at me like an overreactive parent!

Pins and needles can be trapped nerve in upper spine. I have cervical spondylosis as well as ms and also spinal stenosis, I get pins and needles and I had MRI to see if I was in relapse. Try again and good luck, an MRI will show what's wrong

I will pray too. Start a diary of when this happens. What happens before....or leads up to that. What was child doing? Time of day and how long it lasted too. This might help in evaluations. Good luck tomorrow.
Also if it is one hand or both each time. Is one side worse than the other?

So sorry to hear what you're going through. As a parent it is even more difficult to watch our kids going through these things. I agree with the previous poster that it is unlikely to be MS however there are other things that this could be. The range goes from pinched nerve to more serious issues. You didn't mention how long this has been going on for. Does it come and go or is this constant? Also, something very important, did this begin after a flu or other virus, fever etc.? I'm appalled that an ER Doctor would send a child home without doing proper testing. What exactly did they do for her? Did the Doctor mention any possibilities as to what this could be. Remember, you will be the best advocate for your daughter. Depending on what your answers to the above questions are, I might be inclined to get a Neuro consult. These are very specific symptoms you are describing. It's not like a tummy ache which could be from many things. Stay strong and be diligent.

According to my daughter this has been happening for a while and she never thought to tell me, which makes me so very worried.
This has come out of the blue with no other pre-existing issues. It’s only her hands that are effected with the tingling and weakness.

Yes, it definitely sounds like you need a neuro consult and MRI asap. Don't hesitate to go back to the hospital and stand your ground. You can't be too careful when it comes children. Good luck to you and keep us posted.

You did not mention where you are from. Health care options vary greatly. Do you have MS? I do and it is worrisome watching our kids develop and worrying. Do let us know how your daughter is. I had those symptonms in my 20s and had carpal tunnel and agin in my 50s and that was a pinched nerve in neck..

I don’t have MS, but I’m a carrier which is why I went straight to it when she told me.
What’s weird is that it happens every morning and generally again in the evening. She is completely fine during the day. Strength is good and she hangs from the monkey bars with ease. It’s drive us crazy.

Gee that is odd. In the AM and PM are typical of carpal tunnel. Does it wake her up at night? I am from the USA...Virginia. often splints on wrist are used to reposition wrist so nerve is not pinched.

Yes, I'm curious about being a "Carrier" for MS as they haven't found a specific gene. I'm from Canada so would appreciate any info you could share on this. The most recent testing I've heard regarding MS is a new MRI tecnique of determining iron deposits in the brain. This is supposedly going to able to determine when the disease began and what the progression could look like. I have to go to the MS Clinic in 2 weeks and want to put my list together. So if anyone has anything to share on this it would be most appreciated.

I have not heard of the tests you describe. Wow. My lesions (7) since childhood have remained the same. I am now 66. However these lesions according to a change in criteria for MS...in 2012 are not in the areas for MS they say. There is a large group of us left wondering what we really do have. I was diagnosed with MS in my teens and took the interferon drug treatments when I was 40 for 20 years and they did help.
