I have just come out of hospital last night / I am on day 3 ( I think ) I was horribly sick all night on the third night and was put on IV - I am still not entirely sure how Igot up and down the stairs, and made a 3 hour drive without any pain relief (I haven't had any pain relief for 48 hours) I am now home and still without pain relief . I am too scared the sickness cycle will start again - any advice whatsoever would be greatly appreciated. I
That seems incredibly quick to go without pain relief. My hospital encouraged us to take as much pain control as needed. Could you ring the ward and ask for advice on what you could take?
You need pain relief! Emergency GP call out or phone ward and ask why no discharge prescription GP emergency service perhaps nearer. Have you anything left from before your admission? Send hubby to a pharmacy to buy The strongest over the counter meds as possible got interim use? Get him to talk to pharmacist who will possibly know the way to get help quickest.
there are anti sickness medications that can be prescribed to help
do keep us posted
i can only say that pain relief was continuously offered to me and I was discharged with plenty
Hi Rose I am day 3 post op. I came home yesterday . I have 2 doses of OxyContin left to take and was given paracetamol and ibuprofen to take regularly . I was also given a small bottle of oromorph for any break through pain. So far I have not needed the oromorph. Although when the OxyContin has finished I may need it.
I discovered last year when I had a hysterectomy that co-codamol (or actually codeine) made me sick. They now have me down as sensitive to codeine and I take tramadol instead. This won't work for everyone, a lot of people are sensitive to tramadol but it works for me, particularly in conjunction with ibuprofen.
paracaetamol and ibuprofen work well together as well.
I was surprised that when I got out of hospital, I only took tylenol I had no need for anything stronger and pain level stayed at about 2. Twice in rehab after pt i had taken tramadol but didn't like the way I felt and quit they also gave me Norco once but it made me a zombie so stuck to just tylenol. I prefer ibprophren and normally doesn't bother stomach, but has recently.
Thank you for all of your replies - I am very grateful to all of you. I haven't the energy to reply individually but beyond going to the loo and back on my crutches and moving my feet regularly, I am doing okay on the paracetamol. Should I be doing more? I feel so tired mainly. My tummy still feels bubbly and distended but hip okay.
Annie did you have your op on the first of Dec? It is good too now someone else in the same boat at the same time.
I just wondered if I should be doing more / anything else? Is this enough to get better ? I don't want to stiffen up equally my arms start to shake and then my legs when I do much more. Thank you so much
Sorry to hear you are in pain. On discharge I was given paracetamol that I took for times a day and also cocodamol for severe pain, I didn't need to use the cocodamol. I was a little nauseous but not sick. I was very tired for two weeks, fell asleep at the drop of a hat, except at night of course! Good idea to ring the ward for advice. Tony
You will probably feel drained for quite a while, your body was thrashed around and it's been under tremendous stress. Give yourself time, your body will tell you when it's time to do more, listen to it. I don't know what paracetamol is but normally ibprophren never bothered my stomach and worked well but after taking it for so long it started upsetting my stomach. I take tylenol and there is no comparison, doesn't work as well. I take a ppi inhibitor but even with that my gerd has kicked in so til that's gone no ibprophren. Relax, take time to heal, don't push it, good luck.
Hi Rose I had my op on the 2 nd. Everything went surprisingly smoothly. The pain has lessened every day. I'm only allowed to partial weight bear for 6 weeks. I too feel tired but I think that is to be expected after a major op plus the blood loss during the op leaves us a little anaemic .. I have rested with feet up and pottered a little around the house too to combat stiffness I have been given the routine exercises to do 4 times day also. All feels quite surreal at the moment!!
I'm currently 2 weeks post op, went home on day 3, and can say that when I was discharged, I was given pain relief medication and encouraged to take as needed for the first week for sure, as there is a lot of surgical pain yet.
Personally, I was wiped out for the first week. I did the exercises in bed, walked around a few minutes at a time when I had the energy, but mostly slept/rested a lot.
I didn't have much of an appetite for a few days, but ate anyway; your body needs some fuel to start healing.
You should definitely not do without any kind of pain relief. It will harm your recovery and make you miserable, especially once the physio starts working with you.
I hope you get it sorted and find a measure of relief
Glad you survived the trip. That is a long drive. Do not envy you that at all. I don't think the sickness will start again. Move you must though as you will stiffen up. Use your walker that will help alot. If no walker, use your crutches. I only used walker in the house for a couple of days and then started using 1 crutch. My legs and ankles were swollen probably a couple of weeks, that is normal though. Take care
I came home with T3. Ring the dr and have them phone a prescription to your local pharmacy and have someone pick it up. Meanwhile if you have anything, even aspirin I would take it. Might give you some relief. Take care
Rose you poor girl..My worst nighmare..why didn't they give you anti sickness meds? Or did they? I refused any opiate based painkillers for the sickness thing but controlled the pain very well with paracetomol and brufen..8 of the frist and 3 of the second. You must take pain relief and Ithink it is awful you have not been helped with this horrible 'side effect'....
