2-1/2 years with PMR...tapering from 8-1/2 to 8m.....just out of curiosity, I know most people are hungrier on high doses of prednisone and gain weight. I seem to be the opposite...the lower the dose, the hungrier I am. Weird?
LUCKY I've gained 40 lbs in two years from size 6. - to a 16
I want to say something mean lol
I've put on 40kg (88lbs?) in two years!! Unbelievable.
And I'm not eating any more, even though I'd like to!
do you feel better?
have not gone on any meds yet. worried about the side effects. i hadn't thought of weight gain. i wouldnt mind putting on a few pounds. is the weight gain from the pill making you hungry so you eat more, or does it slow the metabloism for the ones who gain? my husband was on it and his personality changed and his energy was very high, he had trouble sleeping. not to mention bone loss and more . . .have you had any side effects? i pose that question to anyone who reads this.
i am sorry you have put on weight. but hope the benifits outweigh it
Try to eat lots fiber read labels, but I think we retain fluids. If I weigh the
benefits to weight gain vs pain, asthma, I take the gain..I find myself telling everyone "I'm on a medication that swells me up" nice to know the wrinkles are minimal, oh btw bruises not healing well
I eat nothing but "real" food - basically 'paleo'. If it has a lable it's not food.
I am 10 months since prednisone treatment. Started at 15mg, currently on 5mg. It does seem to increase appetite, more so at the higher dose. My guess is that it has to do with pred blocking muscle carbo uptake, which causes muscles to "scream - I need more food". I do eat more, but I make sure that I burn it all off via activities. I exercise every day on the average 1.5-2 hours. My weight has not changed much and is actually gone down a bit.
if I get the balance between pred and symptoms wrong I end up less active and eat more. It was harder in the early days. And of course in general I'm less active than I used to be.
Only way I could stop eating chocolate biscuits was to not buy them.
I was on 40 mgs. and food didn't taste right. So, I didn't have much of an appetite. My cholesterol shot up and that freaked me out a little. But, my doctor said it was the prednisone. When I tapered down I began to retain water weight. I am done with the meds after a slow taper. Funny, I run a restaurant for a living and food did not appeal to me. Wine and beer did not taste right either. I slept okay w/ the drug but once I woke in the morning, I was up. I have Raynaud's syndrome and it didn't bother me all winter. I lost all my prednisone weight.
me too! meat and LOTS of veggies! on occasion I have a spot of ice cream, but i do suffer after with inability to sleep, stuffy head, gunky throat, later a headache . . .sometimes it feel worth it.all in moderation.
Hi Kathy I'm same as you I find as coming down the dose I'm putting weight back on, just when I was looking forward to loosing weight I'm down from 80mg to 6mg
At the onset of PMR I lost 18 pounds, involuntarily...18 pounds that I did not need to lose! After 2-1/2 years I am almost back to my original weight...not quite...but I am hungrier as I lower the dose. Have only achieved a dose of 7-1/2m though.
Good news that you have successfully tapered to 5mg in such a short time! I eat pretty well but my exercise level is probably half of what it used to be because of the PMR. The prednisone is definitely effecting my appetite.
I am with you! If I buy a sweet I eat it right away and that'S the end of it!
Can't keep it in the house😊
Wow!...that is a good outcome. Very encouraging to hear from the people who have seen the light at the end of the tunnel! Thank you!
Well, the post above...dboza...is off the prednisone and then lost the weight! Maybe you have to get totally off the prednisone before the weight comes off😊
In my 7 year journey with GCA and PMR I am very hungry when I go on pred and the hunger lessens as the dose comes down. In my last flare I've gone from 80 mg pred to 5 mg. I was up 60 lbs - 50 lbs from this flare and 10 lbs left over from the flare before that. I just started losing - 13 lbs. My problem now is I'm losing very slowly because I sleep all the time. I'm having tremendous pain from my back (scoliosis and stenosis) problems and have to take pain killers. Walking and sometimes sitting hurt. I have an appointment with my pain doc in two weeks and hopefully he can inject me with something to help. We've done this before and sometimes it helps and other times it doesn't.
I also have depression and my meds for that were just doubled. I've been extra depressed and stressed due to hurricane Matthew. My husband, dog and I had to evacuate for three days. We came home to find a huge tree had fallen on the roof and no electricity for two more days. A neighbor helped my husband put temporary patches on the roof to keep the rain out. It's very hard to get things repaired or even get estimates because there are so many damaged houses. We did get a company to cut up the tree. One very big limb went right down to the floor of our sun porch which needs a whole new roof. Our house is only five years old. It doesn't look like everything can be fixed until 2017 and insurance won't take care of everything. I keep trying to tell myself that fortunately we are alive and not hurt but it's hard when you have depression. Jan
I am sorry to hear of the mess you are in! The stress of the pain and fatigue, on top of the home disaster would make any depression worse.
You may want to talk to your doctor about upping your prednisone during this difficult time...plus the pain meds, combined with the anti-depressants could be making it worse. Often the side effects are worse than the illness! I hope you can get help from your doctor...wish you the best in getting out of the depression so that you can deal with the rest💕
Hi Jan so sorry for your misfortune it's bad enough dealing with Gca and PMR and depression thinking of you hope ot all gets better , take care
