Has anyone had a root canal while dealing with PRM and taking 14-1/2m prednisone? Is it dangerous not to have it done because of the infection? Should you up the dose of prednisone before the surgery...and afterwards? What else to look out for?
Thanks.
Hi Kathy,
I had a root canal a couple of months ago and never had a problem.
My dentist was aware of my PMR and said that it would be fine and not cause any problems. He was right.
BTY, I have had PMR for over three years now. Although I bleed/bruise more easily now because of thinner skin, it doesn't seem to have affected my gums.
Ask your dentist his opinion just to make sure you are comfortable.
Cheers,
Shawn
Thanks. Did you take more prednisone before the procedure?
my friend is worried about the additional stress.
Hi Kathy
I did increase my dose by 1 mg when I had root canal treament, just for the day only. I think I was on about 9 mg at the time. I was pretty stressed about it as I had had problems with a previous one ! But it all went smoothly. I hope this helps your friend.
Major dental work causes me a lot more stiffness and discomfort for at least severa days and I've sometimes had to increase my pred by a few mg. Right now I need a a new bridge and am hesitating because I know the pain I will have to go through afterwards so I can sympathize with you!
Hi Kathy
I was on 8mgs of Prednisone at the time and did not take any extra for the dental work.
I wouldn't get too stressed about it, as that only makes things worse.
Cheers,
Shawn
If it's stress you're worried about you can ask for something to relax you during the procedure. You certainly do not want to increase pred to deal with any pain other than your PMR.
HI Kathy, I just kept to my usual dose and was fine after root canal treatment.
