Positive nitrites, negative lukocytes, what is it?

I have been unwell for many months now, and almost housebound with fatigue, weakness and back, neck pain and low blood pressure and ringing in the ears. Anyway mr doctor is trying to figure out what is wrong with me. I have had lots of cloudy wee but a sample was tested and it was clear. But the last few weeks I have had two episodes where my pee is insainly smelly (like old fish and chips with viniger) and then after an hour or so it's completely normal? I have some test strips and the last time this happened it was positive for nitrites (went bright pink) but negative for any lukocytes. I thought if there was infection both would be positive? Also is this maybe something my body is trying to flush out? I have no other urinary symptoms like stinging or burning. Very confused.

Hi Liz

have you been checked for Bacterial Vaginosis ?

Had a smear test recently which was clear would they have looked then?

Hi Liz

if your doc says all is clear then it is confusing ..

as read below ..

useful info

Nitrites. Bacteria that cause a urinary tract infection (UTI) make an enzyme that changes urinary nitrates to nitrites. Nitrites in urine show a UTI is present.

Leukocyte esterase (WBC esterase). Leukocyte esterase shows leukocytes (white blood cells [WBCs]) in the urine. WBCs in the urine may mean a UTI is present.

Thanks for your helpful reply, I'm going to the doctors on Monday to ask for some specimen tubes so that next time it happens I can get it sent off and not miss it to see what it is. Guess that's the only way!

Hi! did you find a diagnosis / resolution? i am having the same issue!! intermittent cloudy/smelly urine and fatigue. my test strips read positive for nitrites, and negative for leukocytes when this occurs. It seems to resolve with usual natural treatment, but keeps returning.
No other UTI symptoms.

did you find out what it was? I'm having the same problem now.
