Hi Danielle
Sounds like IBS symptoms to me. I was diagnosed a few months ago with IBS after a year of investigation, and I experience all the symptoms you have. My symptoms get so bad that I can hardly move around due to the pain. My pains are mainly caused by severe bloating, but even passing wind won't relieve it. I don't experience the increased frequency or irregular BMs that most IBS sufferers go through, one a day man myself, but I do feel like there is more to come when I've finished. Are you BM's an odd shape? Is there any mucus and/or blood present? Not sure if the ultrasound will show much, it didn't with me, but you may need to have a colonoscopy and/or endoscopy to rule out anything else going on. Both procedures are fine with pain relief and sedative, no way was I not having any of that, especially having a combined endoscopy and colonoscopy, ended up falling asleep through most of mine.
I think your Dr is probably right, nothing too sinister going on, but obviously get all the checks done that will rule out other causes. I saw a dietician for the first time yesterday, and one thing I asked her was whether IBS can make you feel as ill as I have been (can feel very weak, dizzy, faint at points with cold sweats, sometimes feel like I'm going to pass out). She sais yes, it can be very debilitating for some sufferers and life changing. Before I got started suffering IBS, and someone came up to me a said they had it, I would have probably said something like 'is that all it is' or 'not too serious then', how wrong was I!
Good luck with the ultrasound and all the best!
Hi paul thanks for your reply
This al started 7/8 weeks ago and i havnt been completly pain free since then,i am glad though that someone else is having similar symtoms to myself!i thought IBS was loose BMS and coulnt understand how i was just having pain 😞As i dont have stomach cramps, very bloated yes and when i wake in the mornings i have a heavy feeling in my stomach that dosnt move with a BM...its so frustrating...sometimes its pellet like BMS and other times their long (tmi i know lol)i understand exactly though as i used to think "its only ibs" i take it back now completely!sometimes it makes me
Think iv something alot more serious im on buscopan and pepermint oil which dosnt seem to b working as not pain free!what do you take paul?
No mucas or blood paul however when it first started i had loose stools with mucas but no blood!
No blood is a good start, and mucus is a symptom of IBS. Bloating is another one, and my main issue. IBS is very difficult to manage and its more about finding out whats right for you. I can't have any sort of peppermint, that will flare me up big time, perhaps you could try not taking it. I'm currently prescribed Omeprazole, as I get quite bad acid reflux, or used to before I started taking it, and I'm prescibed Mebeverine, which is an anti spasmodic, and I take that for my bowels, much the same as Buscopan. You will find the thing that will help you most are changes to your diet. When I started getting IBS symptoms, I had to go to a back to basics with food, and I find that plain white boiled rice is a godsend. If I flare up, then I start to eat white rice for a day or two, and it helps ease my symptoms a lot. I might add a shredded rasher of grilled bacon to it for some flavour (I'm ok with bacon, but a pork chop or pork joint will cause havoc with my bowels). I struggle with most fruit and vegetables, along with sugary foods, processed foods, alcohol, eggs, pork, among others. I have also gone gluten and lactose free, I definitely have a problem wth white bread. I am starting a low FODMAP diet next week at the request of my Dietician, which should relieve my symptoms, if not, then its back to the doctors I guess.
Unfortunately, a lot of IBS sufferers will never be completely pain free, its all about managing the symptoms as best as you can, to make the symptoms easier to deal with. That's not to say that you won't make a recovery though, there are instances where people have gotten over IBS. I suppose that is down to what changes we are prepared to take with diet and lifestyle, and whether we stick to them.
Check out my discussion "What's going on with my digestive system?". its become quite a big discussion and there may be info in there that might help you. But as I said before we are all different, what works for me, may not work for you. Take care!
