Possible Infection

I have had an infected hangnail on my left thumb for over a week now. My incision has also been a bit tender but looks fine. I started antiobiotics a fews days ago and everything started feeling better but now my thumb is killing me again. Has anyone had experience with a minor infection after a THR? I am 6+ weeks post op.

Have the perfect solution. Get antibiotic cream like Neosporin and glob a lot on for overnight sleeping with a big band-aid. By morning, it shouldn't hurt anymore. Do that for a few nights until pain goes away. You must use antibiotic cream overnight for it to work well.

Hi Montyjam,

I am so sorry about your hang nail - not only annoying but also very painful -

how did you get it? what is the treatment plan?

Was your blood checked for infection?

I had UTI right after THR (not much fun either) but no other infections -

Good to see you here again (not so good for you) - How are you getting on otherwise?

big warm hug and take care

I've been soaking my thumb in hot water with epsom salts, applying hydrogen peroxide and then gobbing on the triple action antibiotic cream at night with a banaid over top. I started taking a general, all purpose antibiotic orally and have been on it since Thursday. Seems a bit better today so I will watch it closely.

Renee, I am doing well other than this annoying issue. I'm walking around the house without any aids and using one crutch sparingly when I am out. I am seven weeks tomorrow and seeing the surgeon on Wednesday for my follow up. Exercises are getting too damn easy so I hope the physio's at the hosptial will give me something more challenging to do.

We are current suffering from a sweltering heatwave and I am so darn achy all the time. I've been for acupuncture and hoping to get a massage this week. I would love to stretch properly, do some light yoga and even have a long soak in the tub. So, hopefully, she will lift most, if not all, of my restrictions this week!

I still have a 1/2" leg length discrepancy but am compensating with a lift in one shoe. Low back is killing me, tight adductors means a tight groin and the scar is still a bit tender as it heals. It looks great though. I really feel like I turned a corner at the six week mark after a couple of really dark days. The emotional rollercoaster has been an eyeopener!
