Hi Doodle
My periformis was very tight, almost like an elastic band wound tight. I was given a cortisone injection into the front of my hip, done under ultrasound, by a radiogragher. It felt both hot and cold at the same moment. I was on my back and could feel the liquid travel to the triangle above my bum. It did nothing for my pain, but it helped to release the muscle and I was able to move much better. I had it done a year before my op. I decided to mot have any more injections as too many can soften the bone as well as the pain not easing. The periformis muscle did not tighten up again after that. I have since had both hips done, 16 weeks apart. I should be returning to work in around 5 weeks time.
Good luck, hope you are painfree soon.

Hi Doodle56, I also had what I supposed were piriformis problems following my THR. The pain would be down the outside of my thigh and a tingling numbness in the lower leg. The pain would wake me in the early morning and repeat through the day. I found that it stopped instantly if I stood or sat with my shoulders back and stomach out, almost leaning backwards - but I could not remain like that all day. So I started inventing exercises. As soon as I got up in the morning laying on the floor and doing 30 straight leg raises -then with my ankles as near to my bum as possible 30 swings to the left and 30 swings to the right - then 30 pelvic thrusts. I spent about an hour each morning repeating these exercises much to the amusement of the family, and after a couple of weeks my piriformis pain had become history. I guess if you’ve just had your THR the exercises might be dangerous but that would be up to you to decide.
