Post cataract surgery symptoms

A little over two weeks ago I had cataract surgery and a multifocal lens inserted.  Right after the surgery things were great.  But over the past four days I have awakened in the morning with fogginess in my operated eye.  After about 3-4 hours it clears.  Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Laura

I had a cataract operation on my left eye on 11 January 2014. It was a single vision lens. I had drops to insert initially to allow the eye to heat. It took a long time for the eye to settle - I would say six months. I got a black shadow on the left side where the lens was inserted for at least three months and occassionally what looked like a hair especially when I get tired. However if you are not happy phone the hospital where you got the surgery done.

Hi Laura

I have the same problem with my lens.  I have had it checked out several times.  Apparently it is to do with the gel behind the eye, I was told as you get older the gel liquidifies and particules rise up making things blurred or foggy, also floaters etc.  I always have clear eyes at night.  Apparently this is because gravity pulls them down eventually but when you sleep up it all floats and you are back to square one.  It was clear eventually, my lovely Mr Johnson quoted about 6 months!  If you are at all worried do phone for an appointment if only to reassure yourself.  I had one emergency appointment and two check ups.  When I apologised for making a fuss they said no problem it is good to get everything completely checked and it puts your mind at rest.    Hang on in there Laura.

Another possibility is that it is something more minor like that  you are having an issue with dry eyes, which can also cause blur. If so, lubricating eye drops may help. Many people's eyes dry out during the day, but some wake with them. Dry eye isn't uncommon after cataract surgery, and often eventually goes away (likely its due to nerve cut during surgery). Alternatively perhaps you have allergies or some other reason for your eyes to be not clear when you first wake and a rinse or two with a lubricating eye drop  may help. After cataract surgery when some people's vision is much better than it was beforehand they may notice visual imperfections like some blur that they hadn't paid attention to when their vision was poor in the past.

Thank youm Jacqueline.  Please see my post to Pamela.

Thanks, Softwaredev.  Please see my post to Pamela.

FYI, at the moment I don't see a post to Pamela from you, I don't know if it might be moderated and not have appeared yet due to that (e.g. if you include a link in a message it automatically sends it to a moderator to check) and it will show up eventually,  or if there was some glitch and it didn't post.

Oh.  I'm new to this website and I just assumed....  Anyway, I finally asked my opthalmologist and said he suspects the temporary morning fogginess is due to dryness.  This is especially the case since it clears over a few hours.  He recommended plenty of lubricating drops (the brand, Refresh, to be specific) and  PM at night.  I tried it last night but it did not seem to change anything.  I will try it again tonight.

Hi Laura

I have never found Refresh to work very well.  I use Systane, which is brilliant and if you are having a particularly bad day you can use it as much as you want.

Thank you, Jacqui.  I will definitely check out Systane.

Hi Laura

Let me know how you get on with Systane.

Hi Jacqui,

Thanks for the recommendation of Systane.  It works great!

Hi Laura

So so glad Systane works for you.  I get such relief from it I cannot praise it enough.  Take care
