Post gallbladder removal

Hi there, I had my gallbladder out through key hole surgery on Friday 20th April.  It was a success and no issues with surgery and I was discharged with painkillers the next day.   I have been in constant pain since..around 4/10 pain which is bearable but not affected by the painkillers.  I understand that I will have pain so I can live with it for now.

However for some reason, I am struggling to sit up on my own and lay down on my own.  Most movements are very painful too.  Is this normal?  I feel like a 100 year old woman and I wonder if this is similar to any other experiences?

Thanks so much in advance of any guidance and advice.

Isabelle1504, you had a keyhole type of surgery which means that instruments were inserted through your abdomen and a tube was used to pump CO2 gas allowing the surgeon more room to view the organs. Some amount of gas might have remained in your abdomen when the surgery is done. That is why you feel the pain. And of course no matter how small the incision was it will still hurt once the anaesthesia is gone. That’s the reason why the surgeon prescribe some painkillers after the surgery. It’s only been two days. Give it another couple of days and the pain from the gas will pass.

Yes it’s normal so don’t worry. They’ve cut through your abdominal muscles with the laparoscopic instruments and you’ve had a major surgery, which a lot of people seem to forget.

For the first week I half lay down and half sat up to sleep. Used lots of pillows. Took short walks around the house to disperse the CO2 they use to inflate your stomach. And took painkillers religiously to try and make sure the pain didn’t get too much xx

Thanks so much for the advice, it’s mice to have reassurance that it’s normal and early days. Thank you x

Thank you so much, I have been propped up with lots of pillows in the living room and in bed too.   It’s so reassuring to know that it’s all normal. Thank you again xx

I don't think you should be this bad. I would get in touch with hospital again.

I had gallbladder removed by keyhole surgery 3 years ago and I don't think I was as bad as you are describing.

Take care and keep in touch

Yes you can be in quite a bit of pain...taking your pain pills for first 4 days regularly is better than waiting until pain gets bad(then use as needed) it should be much better starting around day 4,using a small pillow to splint/support your belly can help when you move positions or have to bear down...moving around (as in walking around your house & avoid stairs if you can) helps in many ways & your pain should (by the 4th day) be getting better, if you have ANY concerns or feel something isnt right or pain gets worse, dont be afraid to call aftercare or the hospital...Best Wishes & a speedy full recovery💟
