post op bruising

since the THR right hip 10 days ago I have a bruise on the inside edge of my knee - could this have happened during the operation?

Oh, yes! You can have bruises all up and down your legs, anywhere. I had giant bruising on the back of my calf that lasted for many weeks!

Yes.  It was probably caused when they dislocated your hip.

i have bruises inner thigh, back of leg and knee.i have a lot of swelling also.the back of my knee is solid.i have been trying to rest as much as poss but also attempting bed exercises.as soon as im on my feet though the swelling increases..im using ice packs and elevating leg.i am 16 days post op.

That's exactly the same as mine, makes it difficult to bend the knee.  I am 19 days post op.

Yeah l had a massive bruise behind my.knee but very little bruising anywhere else it puzzled me too

All my swelling and bruising was on and around my knee, everyone thought I had a knee replacement not hip...Go figure!!!!

I had a beautiful hand print, just above my knee, could place my own hand over it, almost perfectly.

When they dis-locate your hip joint, they have to exert a great deal of force, after all its the strongest joint in your body, and your knee I think becomes the victim of that force.

Spoke to Dr in hospital about my bruise, I told him he must have held on too tight, look at this, he agreed with me he must have held on too tight, and we had a good laugh about the lovely bruise, to be honest, I knew I would be covered in bruises, a lot less than I expected.

My sister/sibling is a very senior nurse in hospital, and some years ago gave me a run down on what to expect, we were discussing my uncles hip replacement, in his 80's, double six weeks apart, and even said the first time she witnessed a hip replacement she was rather shocked at the force that had to be used.

Oh yes! I had some bruising behind my knee and thigh......

Thank you so much for your comments - without this forum I would be lost

Hi Sarah,

Me too - after 1st THR beautiful handprint on right leg and bruise competing with the ones on belly from Fragmin injections ...

When in OK, right before 2nd THR I asked surgeon to handle me with more care , and no bruises at all on left leg ----

it might be sensitive upon touching it but shouldn't hurt -

How are you getting on other wise?

big warm hug darling,

renee

It is day 11 for me and my family who took turns helping me out have all gone back to their lives. I think I am doing ok - I said in another comment that i will find it hard to do things like wash my hair, change the bedding and do the laundry.  I have a shop at the end of the road which I can walk to on both crutches and not buy much because I have to carry it home. I could do online food shopping but I think the exercise is good for me. I do feel tired and also a bit tearful at times. Sadly I have also found out some so called friends have shown their true colours - you know the ones who say to you " if you need anything just ask" and when you do they are suddenly very busy. Its all a giant change to me - I live alone and am very independant. But I have to say its wonderful not to have that ghastly OA pain gnawing away in my hip and this forum is a great help and comfort not to feel alone in all this

hug

Sarah

Sarah,

You are not alone - this forum is a life saver.

Sarah,

This forum is an recovery changer - without it, where would we be? Many of us would be constantly on to the hospital and consultant every time something came up.  The hospitals should be so grateful that this facility is here. I know I am.

Bless you, that's so tough to do it alone. I had help on the first week and then days on my own until my partner came home. If it's any consolation I think most people will tell you that they have had spells of tearfulness. This op is brutal and huge. You are doing so well and your independence will get you through. In the meantime, talk to us, there is always someone around even in the wee small hours.

Quite similar to mine Michael and Wendy. I finally took a day of rest with ice packs elevation and went back to a 6 vs 8 hr pill schedule. I still did a few exercises in bed but did not push it. Three days later (# 17) I am doing much better. AND, I broke one of the rules given here and used our recliner (heaven to be out of my straight-back throne with legs supported). I may do it again but ensuring supping arm getting in and out. It is finally a warm sunny day here (+4), so I am going to attempt my first outdoor walk. Hugs to all.

Sure wish I could do more than send a virtual hug!😂 you make me feel very lucky. Hugs, hugs, hugs.

Have you seen my recliner on my website? I built a box to raise it before I had my first operation.   Works a treat.
