Post-op footwear - when to 'orthotic'

I am interested in thoughts about good supportive footwear for summer, esp as I was advised to avoid using footwear from pre-surgery (which might have developed wear that works against the new hip and gait).

But .... who can afford a new wardrobe of good shoes when looking at another THR in 3 months? Any advice about specific models that you have found provide good support and could be worn with dresses for occasions?

I think I will wait for new orthotics until after my next THR. I wonder how long to wait for things to settle down ...

I bought some skechers gowalk for use post op in hospital but i was so swollen couldnt get on.

I had some new Adesso elastic shoes and used them and continue to do so.

Theyre light comfy and supportive plus not slippy in hospital environment.

They had some on QVC today. Theyre on pavers website too.

I found my pre-op footwear was hampering my walking - so yes, it's a good idea to get some new shoes (what an excuse, eh?).  But, having another THR in 3 months, you might just want to wait until that's done, perhaps use a pair of shoes not so well worn for now?

Hi Linda, I've got quite bad ankle pronation in my right leg & have spent a small fortune on podiatrists & insoles. I won't be changing my footwear for this reason but the Physio, when I went for my pre-op last week, was happy that I wear cross as long as I have the back strap on x

Hi Linda,

i have just got to week 2 of thr after many years of gait changes, including two toe operations on the opposite foot and your post has just made me realise that I should not be wearing my old shoes so THANKYOU, 

goodness, I am battling with a new centre core line, twisted pelvis and scoliosis issues to correct but hope awareness will straighten things up a bit

over time

sorry I cannot answer your question..... .but I will definitely throw out my flatties and get some new summer ones.

Hi Jacqui,

It makes so much sense when you hear it, but it is no simple matter to replace good shoes one has gathered over a decade - sometimes ignoring good sense.

You are really fighting a battle aren't you? I am so sorry for all your troubles - you have more than your share to contend with. I hope you are on the home stretch with operations and just (huh!) working through physio and exercise now.

Good question ...I didn't think about this until one of our members here mentioned it - By then I had my 1st THR and on my way to get the 2nd one - Pre-op I had bought some orthopedic shoes  and kept wearing them - they were expensive but also ugly - I also bought some inexpensive shoes for summer - 

not smart choices I have to admit - but yes, I couldn't afford expensive footwear knowing that the other hip needed to get done - 

to be honest, I still am not happy with the post-op shoes I am  wearing - can't find ones that look sort of  nice and are comfortable -

I have been wearing crocks around the house though

Ps...i have a love of pretty shoes but not been able to wear heels due to pain from hip and back has been horrid.

(Not that i can manage skyscraper heels 😉), but do any hippies recover enough to resume wearing any height at all post op?

It broke my heart to throw many pairs of my preop shoes away...flats too as they were worn away from limping 😢

so new post op shopping due when i get all clear from surgeon ((saved my birthday cash for this as was in hospital having thr when that came around lol).👠👡👟

I still haven't thrown out/ given away my ' dress-up shoes' . 😟😨

And finding good support shoes in size 42 is not easy ... ones that look good even harder.

However as I received some birthday $ recently I am thinking of putting it aside and adding a loonies ($1piece). Each day until I recover from THR 2 to indulge a little. Thanks for inspiring the idea Angela and Renée.

I bought a pair of Skechers latest gowalks, which are incredibly comfortable. I couldn't put shoes on for weeks after the op but I wear my Skechers everywhere now. I wanted to get the really colourful ones, but had to get something more sedate in case I need them for work meetings...

I did notice about six or so weeks ago that my op side always felt "turned in" when I walked, so have been making an effort to ensure my foot is straight or slightly turned out. I think if I'd worn the new shoes earlier, I might not have fallen into that bad habit.

Many thanks Belle. I will have a look at them and since I am retired, I can go for the bright, colourful ones.
